The Winchester brothers are back for what looks like Supernatural’s season to beat. The season 10 premiere of the CW’s longest running show proved that they have plenty more to provide and don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
Surprisingly, the premiere didn’t have any dramatic deaths or plot twists like previous season premieres, which is not a bad thing. In fact, it was rather refreshing to see the writers step back from the normal heart wrenching premieres and have a genuinely enjoyable and humorous episode to set the mood for the season.
The episode starts out with Sam torturing a demon trying to find out any information about his missing brother, Dean. But during Sam’s frantic search for his brother, a man by the name of Cole Trenton tracks Sam down and captures him. Cole is supposedly a hunter who has an apparent score to settle with Dean for a reason unknown.
Unfortunately, Dean does not want to be found, and this causes a great problem with both Sam and Cole. The demon blood pumping through his veins has given Dean a newfound freedom and he wants to take full advantage of it without the presence of his brother.
Of course, this new and improved version of Dean has some setbacks. He’s a danger to anyone around him and his anger can not be controlled. Crowley, the king of Hell, sees this as an opportunity to get the upper hand in the monster world. He quickly becomes “besties” with Dean, making the two the most dangerous duo around.
Castiel’s stolen grace is continuing to fade away at a very quick pace, so quick that he is more human than he is angel. If Cas doesn’t find his own grace soon, he will die. It’ll be interesting to see where they take this storyline, because while Castiel is my favorite character, the angel storyline has become quite repetitive and I could do without it.
The birth of demon Dean is probably the best plot twist the show has had in quite a few years. I hope the writers don’t get rid of the black eyes too soon. If written correctly, demon Dean could easily last all season, if not longer (That is if the show gets renewed for an 11th season). Regardless, the season premiere was a fantastic start to what seems like one of the best Supernatural seasons to date.
