Pitman high school’s color guard team, who are they? What do they do? Well a color guard team is an essential part of a marching band’s unit. They are a unified team of school representatives that use flags, rifles, and shields to perform with their fellow band members.

Color guard is not only a “visual aspect” but they are vital part of a marching band. Their various talents during performances includes synchronized dancing, the tossing of flags, and unique spins of their equipment to enhance performances during halftime and other sports.

Our color guard team here on campus are hard working individuals that spend countless hours practicing, and making sure that their performances are beyond exceptional. Performances not only bring spirit and motivation to our football games, but they represent our school as a unit.

An issue that seems to be arising is the the lack of appreciation and acknowledgment towards our colorguard boys and girls. These talented performers deserve a moment of appreciation, and should be promoted as an important part of our school’s spirit and band.

When a few of our color guard members were asked on how they believe people view them and their performances the responses did not vary by much.

“I think people don’t really appreciate us. They don’t seem to know the hard work every person puts into it. Blood sweat and tears honestly go into our practices.”  – Color guard member

“We don’t get enough credit. I feel like people say we are important but in reality they don’t really treat us like we are…we are hardly in the yearbook. We don’t even get a team photo for ourselves.” –  Color guard member

“I just want people to have actual admiration for us, and our hard work that we all put into our performances especially this year, we’re learning new choreography that we have never done before. All those mondays that we spend from 5 to 8 sweating and working our butts off to make our routines look as perfect as possible.” –  Color guard member

“Honestly people don’t acknowledge color guard as the hard working team they are. Probably because they have never tried it.”  – Color guard member

Even fellow students who have observed color guards performances can agree that they should receive more recognition.

“We don’t give them enough credit at our games. Color guard is awesome. They give such a good vibe during the games” – JT Mercer (Football player)

“Color guard is great. I have always enjoyed watching them more than any other performance. I do think they should get more credit.” – Jasmine Acosta

These generous and honest thoughts from fellow students are just a few of the many positive comments that were given when asked about our color guard team.

As Pitman high students and faculty we should always acknowledge our teams, and show our appreciation whether that is going to go watch a performance or even just telling the members what a great job they did. It shows true support for our hard working color guard team.
