For almost as long as prom has been around, students have come up with creative ways to ask and answer their dates. It is a great way for teens to become very excited for such a memorable event.
For prom, it is usually the guy asking the girl. There is no doubt creativity ranges between both ends of the spectrum. Some ideas tend to be superficial, while others end up quite original. Either way, their date will be flattered and most likely love it. It is the thought that counts, right? A fairly common way to ask someone to prom is by decorating their car with the phrase “Prom?” on it somewhere. This idea is fun, simple, and easy to clean up. Another cute idea from a friend is tying a note around a pet’s (in this case dog) neck that reads “Prom with _____?” and take the pet to their dates doorstep, ding-dong-ditch and then they will open their door to a very precious face. Obviously this does not work with a goldfish, but another idea that does would be to decorate a fishbowl/tank type object like an ocean, place fish in the object and write the phrase “Of all the fish in the sea, prom with me?”
The most creative of ways I have personally seen was this year, the way my date asked me. I dance at Backstage Dance Academy; it is something I really love to do. One day at practice I was stretching; not really paying any attention and then three guys wearing white masks, dressed like gangsters walked into the room. The stereo began to play the song Freeze by T-Pain and they did a three and a half minute dance. At the end one of the guys pulled out a poster from the other guy’s sleeve that said “Kelsey- Prom with masked man?” and then my date took his mask off. I was so excited and had a big adrenaline rush since everyone in the studio was watching. I give him a lot of props for doing something so gutsy and stepping far out of his comfort zone.
Usually when a girl is asked to prom, she wants to answer back in a similarly creative way. The idea of decorating a person’s car goes both ways, so writing “yes” on a date’s car would be very cute. Some girls have made a scavenger hunt where much time and effort has been put in, which usually turns out worth it in the end. Since my date went all out to ask me, I did my best to go all out answering him. I decided to write a rap that I would do in one of his classes (which ended up being his English class) while his two friends Anthony Narsi and Jon Terry beat boxed. I attempted to dress like a rapper. At the end of my rap I removed my jacket and my shirt said “YES” on it. He was just about as excited as I was when I was asked and I was very proud of myself for actually going through with it.
When it comes to prom people may decide to go in a group of friends instead of with a date. This can be beneficial since it takes away from all the pressure of asking someone and fear of rejection or rejecting, etc. there is also no obligation to remain with a date all night, and one can mingle freely without feeling guilty. It creates a very chill, relaxed and care-free environment.
Everyone is different and has different preferences, but no matter what the experience is one no high school junior or senior should miss. How many schools have their prom on a yacht in San Francisco? So don’t miss out!
