The use of the internet, computers, and the phone go hand in hand, but when the most crucial aspect of our technology fails, the internet, the world as we know it will change dramatically. When the internet is destroyed by a virus or by something we don’t understand, the world of internet and everything connected to it will be in disorder.
Some of the problems that are involved with the loss of the internet would be changes to the way people communicate, inform, and entertain. Communication would be stopped and people would need to go back to calling on land lines, and sending letters in the mail. Most people in the United States rely on the internet and cell phones to communicate. Remove one or both of these items and panic will erupt in the technological society.
This society uses internet in schools, businesses, libraries, and homes. Businesses will most likely be halted for a short time, while communications to other stores and businesses will need to be reconnected. For example, if a food store needed to order food to restock, but couldn’t contact any delivery businesses because the food store uses the internet to do so. That is only one example of what will happen to business.
Schools and students will also need to make some changes in daily life. Teachers use the internet to inform and to use visual aids to show and teach. Students use the internet to study and research for school.
When two Pitman students were asked what life would be like without the internet, they replied, “It would be very hard! I wouldn’t know what’s going on in the world and I would have to try harder in school if I couldn’t Google it.” Information would need to be found in books and newspapers.
Another obvious problem would be all the online newspapers that couldn’t run anymore. They would either need to be canceled or put back onto paper which would cost a great amount of money. Publishing newspapers on the internet is more cost-effective than printed format and most newspapers would be canceled due to lack of money.
If we didn’t have internet, online games and gaming businesses would suffer a great loss. New games would be promoted by newspaper and a free game trial can’t be played on paper. Websites like YouTube will cease to exist for the time being. Comic books and newspaper comics would become a more popular form of entertainment, like they were a few decades ago.
This is a hypothetical, but not impossible situation and internet loss could create a very large and unavoidable problem that would take time to fix or adapt to. Governments would have their hands full to try and help citizens and to either restore the internet or come up with something better.
