Fashion, by dictionary definition, means a currently popular style or practice. But at school, fashion is redefined as comfortable, original, and you! Fashion is any everyday occurrence. It’s what we wear, and technically, fashion never goes out of style.
The 1700’s created the small-waist-huge-bottom look; the 1950’s brought us leather jackets and poodle skirts; the 1970’s originated platforms and vivid color; the millennium is bringing us new technology and a futuristic trend.
Males in the 1950’s also known as the “greasers/ bad boys” wore leather jackets but now these jackets are a trend for both males and females. However females make the edgy look much more feminine. The 1700’s influenced us by the wedding dress silhouettes, and the 1970’s popularized the high heeled shoes and colorful fabrics.
Mrs. Cornell, Pitman’s very first fashion teacher, teaches her students these kinds of trends to understand that no matter how ancient they are, they will always be “in” or “out”. With her experience in fashion at Express, Mrs. Cornell decided to attend MJC to get her degree in Fashion Merchandising. Her interest towards fashion increased when she was influenced by her teacher, Sy Ogawa.
Throughout her twelve years of teaching fashion, Cornell has learned something new each year and is impressed by her students’ individual style. Cornell has taught her students well and her word of advice is to “wear things that fit right, feel comfortable, and avoid the things that are too tight and that are uncomfortable.” Pitman’s fashion will hopefully continue to change positively in the future and invent authentic trends reflecting the constantly changing lifestyles.
