Talk about a dream come true. Colin Kaepernick, former Pitman High Graduate, also Nevada Wolf Pack alumni, was drafted by the 49ers in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Although the 49ers moved up to get the pride alumni; many NFL experts thought it was a reach to grab Kaepernick early in the second round, but to contradict that point many also thought it was the best pick in the second round. Kaepernick grew up watching the team that played their home games two hours away from his hometown. On the second day of the draft right after the 49ers called him he left to the 49ers heads facility in Santa Clara. Kaepernick is the second quarterback in the last six years to be drafted in the first two rounds by the 49ers. The last was Alex Smith, who by all standards did not perform at the high level the 49ers organization and fans expected him to do.
When Colin Kaepernick was asked what number he will be wearing, he began his response by saying that what happened in college is what he did in college, it’s over, it has nothing to do with what his professional career with the 49ers.” This tells fans that he will most likely not wear the number ten and more importantly that he is starting anew in his football career. When new 49er head coach, Jim Harbauh, was asked what he likes about Kaepernick he replied, “He likes to compete”. Coach Harbaugh also compared himself to Kaepernick by saying, “When I hit the field, I like to have fun and he has the same mind set.”
When the 49ers drafted Kaepernick, they drafted the position requiring the most attention in their roster. The position which commands the huddle, the position which leads your team to championships, the quarterback. When the 49ers drafted Kaepernick they knew the lockout would make things difficult; having veteran quarterback David Carr still under contract. There are also rumors of free agent quarterback Alex Smith coming back to the 49ers, which would cause a three-way quarterback competition between the rookie and the two veteran quarterbacks. Coach Jim Harbaugh still is unchanged about his plan to bring Alex Smith to the 49ers, he said, “Alex has the ability and license to be a starting quarterback in this league and so does Colin. We want the best player on the field and roster so they can throw the balls and compete.” A reason why coach Harbaugh said this is because Colin Kaepernick produced in college. He is the only quarterback in College football history to throw for 10,000 yards and rush for 4,000 yards. These are promising numbers to translate to NFL success.
