What Came First, the Turkey or the Reindeer?

Halloween just, and it is now November. Already, everyone has changed from their spooky moods to their Christmas vibe, despite the fact that there are still two months until Christmas, and Thanksgiving hasn’t even passed yet.

November is probably the most odd month in the holiday season. Every retail store and most of society just skips over the idea of Thanksgiving, even though it is a pretty significant holiday. Within a few days, stores are filled with Christmas trees, new Christmas cups and decorations, and even hang lights all over the place inside and out. Some even go to the extent of already having Thanksgiving decorations on clearance by the beginning of November.

The main reason for this is because Thanksgiving falls in between the two most popular seasons of the year, giving retailers the perfect chance to spring all of their Christmas products onto customers even though they just bought Halloween decorations two days ago.

Perhaps it could be the fact that there is not really a Thanksgiving season, no caroling, no peppermint cookies, and no gift giving. However, this might just be the most ironic thing about the Holiday itself. Thanksgiving is a day about being with family and celebrating what you are thankful for, one of the only holidays that doesn’t revolve around marketing and buying things. But once dinner is over, in most cases, the family is sitting around the table cutting out coupons and looking for the best deals for Black Friday, where some will literally start a fight just to get the last flat screen tv that is on sale.

Basically department stores are who to blame for Thanksgiving’s lack of acknowledgement because they have put such a stress of the importance and urgency for gifts on society, all for marketing purposes.

Perhaps it could also be the fact that the weeks after Thanksgiving consist of the same turkey sandwiches, turkey soup, and just plain turkey. These leftovers get old after eating them for every meal of the day for a week straight. However that is not the matter, the focus of the holiday should be about family. It is sad that the holiday is overshadowed by two holidays focused around gifts and candy.

Next time you think to start singing carols, take a moment to realize you should hold off for a few more weeks and truly let Thanksgiving have it’s time to bring everyone together.
