Highlights of the 2016 Election

November 8th, 2016 was a stressful day and night for all Americans. People were biting their nails impatiently and both parties were waiting for the electoral college to decide the upcoming president of 2017. Many Americans dreaded the day while others were fairly confident on who the next president was going to be.

A year earlier Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton announced to run for president. Many people took this campaign as a joke because they could not believe that a businessman and a former first lady that ran for president in 2008 were going to potentially be the next president of the United States of America. Both of the party’s presidential campaign was filled with stress from name calling, exposing each other’s personal life, and debating over important issues such as foreign policy, abortion, gun control, etc.

While Donald Trump was campaigning he promised to build a wall on the southern border and he stated that Mexico was going to pay for it. Trump promised to keep muslims from entering the United States by the end of his first 100 days in office. He also promised to bring manufacturing jobs back that have been lost.

While Hillary Clinton was campaigning she to made promises to Americans. Clinton promised to eliminate tuition for families that are making less than 125,000 a year. Clinton promised to pass comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship that will keep families together. She also promised to fight for equal pay.

Throughout the day and night of November 8th adults from all over the nation voted on who they thought would be a better choice for America. As the votes kept coming in America grew more impatient and before a president was chosen some Americans were already assuming the next U.S. president.

On November 9th, 2016 the electoral college decided that Donald J. Trump is going to be the upcoming president of 2017. Before he won the presidency Trump’s family reported Donald to be patient and very calm on election day. Trump might have been happy and calm that day however, many Americans were upset and some celebrated Trump’s victory.

The morning that Trump won the presidency he gave a victory speech. In his speech he thanked the ones who voted for him and also thanked his family, friends, and those who helped him run his campaign. Trump mentioned that he congratulated Hillary Clinton and her family on working hard on their campaign. He also stated that he is going to make America a better and safer place for Americans once he becomes president.

The following morning Hillary Clinton gave a concession speech. She to mentioned that she congratulated Trump and his family on his victory. She thanked those who stood by her side and voted for her in while she ran for president. She described her loss as painful but she wishes for a good outcome of this election.

Richard Odegaard, a Trump supporter talks about how Trump will indeed be a good president:

“With the people that he’s going to surround himself with, his cabinet members, I think I will definitely show people that he is ready to be president, these changes will be good for everybody not just the people that voted for him, not Republicans, but Democrats and Americans as a whole.”

Mr. Thomas, a US History Teacher speaks his thoughts about the election:

“I am really angry because in the election with the two least popular candidates in all of American history, I am disappointed that the American people still voted Democrat and Republican instead of trying to go for a third option. I am not saying that the third options were amazing but it bothers me that only 2.3 percent of the public even thought about a third party candidate in a year were the Democrat and the Republican were unacceptable will be the polite way to put it. So I guess I am just disappointed in the people for thinking that they have two options and two options only.”
