After your viewing of Black Panther, many thoughts and questions will run across your mind. The most recent installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe offers something that most other installments lack: a thought-provoking story.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther chronicles T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) appointment as king of Wakanda, and the challenges he must face in order to sustain the throne. The film features a star-studded cast with the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, and Forest Whitaker.

From the opening scene to the last, the film offers rich visuals that are unrivaled by any other Marvel installment. In addition, the music, which was curated by Kendrick Lamar, fit nicely with the film, and did not seemed forced.

The first half of the film moves at a slower pace, as it precisely introduces  the audience members to the world of Wakanda. This includes traditional rituals that are performed to unique outfits that are sported by the Wakandans. From then on, the plot accelerates slightly quicker. While overall, the film’s pacing is slower than that of other Marvel installments, which are typically fast-paced, it does not have a negative effect on the film, and surprisingly, you will not be bored.

The scenes featuring the villain, Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), is where the film is at its best. With Killmonger, Marvel has released their easily most compelling, and emotional villain to date. Unlike any other nemesis, Killmonger offers believable motivations for his actions, and often, allows the audience to be sympathetic with him. In fact, Killmonger is such a strong character, that audience members may be won over by him, instead of rooting for the hero, T’Challa.

While the action sequences are spectacular, you will not leave the theater thinking about the action. You will instead be thinking of the issues that are explored throughout the film, and must decide for yourself what is right from wrong.

The majority of superhero films that are released often put action first, with character development and story coming after. However, Black Panther breaks away from the boundaries that have enclosed the superhero genre for decades and offers a fresh, absorbing narrative that consists of strong characters and stunning visuals. You will not be disappointed.
