Sony is allowing Marvel to use Spider-Man in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The deal is that Spider-Man will first appear in the Marvel film “Captain America 3: Civil War” or “Avengers: Infinity war”, and then the studios will collaborate to produce the next Spider-Man film which will be released on July 28, 2017. For those who have read the “Civil War” comics will remember that Spider-Man plays a big role in the story. In a fight between pro-registration superheroes (led by Iron Man) and anti-registration superheroes (led by Captain America), Spider-Man finds himself caught in the middle, but joins Iron Man’s side. However, Spider-Man may not make his appearance until the fourth Avengers movie.
Many Marvel and Sony producers and developers are excited about this collaboration. “Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker’s story into the future,” said Doug Belgrad, president, of the Sony Pictures Entertainment motion picture group.
“We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful film makers to grow our franchise and develop our character. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man”, said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Sony decided to ask marvel to help them since “The Amazing Spider-Man” franchise didn’t meet expectations. Fans are happy about this agreement since many of them want a movie that is more accurate to the comics. Expectations were high for “The Amazing Spider-Man” franchise, which ended up being the lowest-grossing franchise domestically and worldwide. Sony canceled the making of the third movie in the franchise and apparently reconsidering everything. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 lost its release date, after writer and producer Roberto Orci left the project, speaking of an uncertain future for the movie. The plan was for Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six movie to come out in November 2016, but it was canceled.
Marvel would have to pay Sony a fee, for every movie appearance that Spider-Man is involved in. Sony is also going to limit the things that Marvel could do with Spider Man so it doesn’t interfere with future Sony films.
Marvel studio president, Kevin Feige, said “I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie; Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Sony wouldn’t want Marvel to do poorly, since it is one of their most successful franchises and they have made over four billion dollars with Marvel.
