The NBA All Star weekend, also known as the All-Star break, took place this last weekend, from February 13th to February 15th, and was quite successful amongst the fans and supporters of the NBA.
The NBA All-Star weekend is an event that takes place every year in February in the middle of the NBA regular season, to showcase and display the abilities of some of the most talented and skilled players in the NBA. The weekend is filled with a multitude of activities and events that take place, including events such as the Dunk Contest, 3-Point Contest, and the Skills Challenge, concluding on Sunday with the East vs. West All-Star Game.
On Friday, the All-Star weekend was kicked off with the Bravest vs. Finest game, which featured NYPD and FDNY members facing against each other, along with NBA legends. The game helped raise money for both the FDNY Foundation and the NYPD Foundation’s Heroes Fund.
The other events that took place that evening was the D-League Dream Factory, a replica of the NBA All-Star activities that take place on Saturday, namely the Slam Dunk Contest, the Skills Challenge, and the 3-Point Contest. The D-League, otherwise known as the Development League, consists of athletes that are hoping to develop themselves into NBA-potential athletes.
On Saturday, the State Farm All-Star Saturday Night was the main event, consisting of the Shooting Stars Challenge, the Skills Challenge, the 3-Point Contest, and the Slam Dunk Contest.
The Shooting Stars Challenge, an event that has a team made up of an NBA player, a WNBA player, and a retired NBA Hall of Famer, consists of 3 specific shots. One is a shot just outside the key, another is a shot from the 3-point line, and the final shot is a half-court shot. The winner of the contest was Team Bosh, which consisted of Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins, NBA All-Star Chris Bosh, and WNBA player Swin Cash. They finished with the best time of 56.7 seconds.
The winner of the Skills Challenge was Patrick Beverley of the Houston Rockets, pulling the upset over Brandon Knight. The Skills Challenge is a short course in which players are required to show their ball handling skills by dribbling through cones, passing a ball through a hoop, and shooting a 3-pointer as quickly as possible.
The winner of the 3-Point Contest, a contest that tests the 3-point shooting abilities of some of the best NBA players, was Stephen Curry. Curry commandingly took control in the championship round by accumulating over 27 points.
The final event of the night, the Slam Dunk Contest, was won by the rookie Zach LaVine. His most notable dunk was his between-the-legs reverse windmill, which was performed on the very first try after changing into a Michael Jordan jersey from the movie “Space Jam,” according to an nba.com article.
On Sunday, the final event of the All-Star weekend took place, which was the All-Star Game. It consists of the top players in NBA facing off against each other in a basketball team, separated by region, East vs. West.
The West All-Stars took the win with a 142-137 victory over the East All-Stars. Russell Westbrook was the MVP with 41 points, according to an article on espn.com.
Overall, the All-Star Break was a flurry of fun, giving the fans a show and display of the incredible talents and abilities of NBA athletes, who have all worked extremely hard to get to where they are today. This weekend served as a great way to entertain fans and allow the NBA players to come together and enjoy the sport they love most: basketball.
