The movie Trick ‘R Treat, directed by Michael Dougherty, is a very good Halloween movie. It’s not your typical “slasher” movie though. I am a huge fan of horror films but this was nice change.
The movie is told in four different stories, all of which are occurring the same night and around the same time. It’s a bit difficult to understand what is going on at first but all of the stories have are tied-in. The main character’s name is Sam, or, better known as Samhain on Halloween. He is basically the killer of the movie but he’s not like Michael Myers of Halloween or Freddy Krueger of A Nightmare on Elm Street. He wreaks havoc on those who disobey the rules of Halloween.
The second story is about a girl named Lorie and her sister and her friends. Lorie has no boyfriend and the girls all want to find her one, except for her sister who dislikes the idea. They tell Lorie they’ve found someone who she’d like but she ignores them and goes off on her own.
The third story is about five trick-or-treaters. The oldest girl tells them they have to bring eight jack-o-lanterns for an offering to the eight children who died in the bus crash. She then proceeds to tell them the story of the mentally disturbed children who died.
The fourth and final story is about an old hermit who lives with his dog. He hated Halloween and scared trick ‘r treaters for fun.
Overall, the movie was very interesting, there were many confusing things but it makes sense later on in the movie. The ending had a bit of a twist. If you’ve ever seen the movie Pulp Fiction, you’ll understand.
I enjoyed the movie and I’d definitely add it to my horror movie collection. This movie was supposed to be released two years ago. It was never put into theaters so it’s not well known, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a watch. It is rated R, however, but in my opinion the violence is not over-the-top.
