After a disappointing loss at the CCC tournament to the Los Banos Tigers last weekend by 4.5 points that was reduced to 1.5 after a coaches recount, the Pitman Pride came back with a team win at the San Joaquin section tournament, earning 190.5 points and the second place Los Banos earning 139. This win came as somewhat of a surprise to coach Adam Vasconcellos. “We were so close. Finally our kids put it together on the same weekend.”
After losing such close matches last week, Coach Vasconcellos said, “It really helps to win the one-point matches.”
The weekend win came on the backs of champions Andrew Perez (135), Robert Vasquez (140), Gustavo Verver (189), and Pablo Guerrero in the heavyweight division, all of whom won last week at the CCC meet. Pitman also had wrestlers Tyler Klinkhammer, Derrick Avila, Aaron Manley, and Marcel Vega coming in second, second, fourth, and sixth respectively. These are among nine Pitman wrestlers who will be heading to the Masters tournament in Stockton this weekend in hopes to make it to the State tournament. This win came as a strong win for a team that came close to winning many tournaments before this weekend but were not able to put together a full team effort. Coach Vasconcellos summed it up perfectly saying, “We wrestled a perfect weekend,” something the Pride will have to do if they hope to have several wrestlers in the State tournament.
