“You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk,” is an expression that Anne Thomas, a 14 year-old freshman has encountered over the past couple of weeks. When the devastating earthquake in Haiti struck, Thomas longed to organize something that would help a country that was so greatly in need. Using her organization skills, talent, and passion, Thomas has organized a benefit concert for the victims of Haiti.
A concert might seem like an obscure idea for raising money, yet this is not new territory for Thomas. “I organized a concert a year ago to raise money for a trip I was going on, and it was very successful,” Thomas acknowledges. Music is an important staple in Thomas’s life, so it makes sense that she’s not only organizing this event, but she will also be participating by playing the cello.
The Young Artists for Haiti Benefit Concert will be held on March 18, 7:30 pm, at Snyder Hall (CSUS) with tickets selling for a $15 donation. Apart from Anne Thomas on the cello, the other young artists who will be performing are: Olivia Berumen, soprano; Tayler and Mallery Eppler, South American folk harps; Kate Matson, violin; Marty Matson, violin; Madeline Olson, grand pedal harp; Jeffrey Shen, piano; and Hannah Prendez, flute. Organizing this concert has been no small task. Emails were made to coordinate the performances, press releases were to be published by local newspapers, the venue for the concert needed to be booked, designing of flyers and tickets were arranged, and details with Red Cross dealing with donations was to be sorted through. After all of this was done, Thomas hopes to accomplish a few of her own goals through this concert.
Thomas hopes that $5,000 will be donated, but in order for this goal to be achieved, the auditorium must be a full house, as well as have extra donations given. “Our $5000 goal may seem like a lot, but it’s a small amount compared to the need,” states Anne. To put this in perspective, $5,000 is enough to buy one prosthetic limb, while there are thousands in need.
“I hope to inspire and connect everyone who participates in and attends the concert,” states Anne. After much work and determination, the concert will be executed on Thursday. The performances will consist of immensely talented young musicians and all profits will go towards Haiti relief. Turlock’s youth is taking a step in helping Haiti, yet it will only be successful with your help. Tickets can be bought ahead of time, or at the door. Thursday, March 18th– be there!
