“We were given a very short time period to paint six 4’ by 8’ murals. It took us three months,” comments Mr. Detomasi of the Pitman Art Department’s most recent project. Way back in February, Pitman was asked by the Stanislaus County Court House to paint six murals to be displayed at the Vintage Faire Mall for a Law Day celebration held on May 1. Students were then asked to volunteer to help with the murals, which provided a wide variety of students from all different art classes. The students worked long and hard to make these fantastic murals to help with the Law Day celebration.
Established in 1958, by President Eisenhower, Law Day is usually celebrated by those in the legal profession. It is a celebration of our legal system in the US and our democratic government and the murals were used as an added decoration to symbolize that. Each student worked tirelessly at lunch and after school daily to finish them on time.
On May 1, each of the murals were hung in the Vintage Faire Mall during the celebration, which included giveaways, minor transactions, and information provided by representatives from different areas of the court. Each mural depicted something that represents Law Day, which includes President Eisenhower, and one honoring fallen police officers. The murals were then taken to the Stanislaus County Court House to be displayed for a year.
When the murals are returned, Mr. Detomasi plans to have them displayed somewhere on campus.
