Right as I was about to have a seizure over having to sit through another cheap footage video diary (such as Paranormal Activity), Max Landis and Josh Trank saved me by writing Chronicle. Although the film has somewhat of a mainstream concept, it sets itself apart by having a main character that ultimately develops into a villain and the plot has a not-so-fulfilling cliffhanger ending.
Chronicle follows the lives of three high school boys, particularly Andrew Detmer. After having attended a rave, the boys discover that they have gained telekinetic powers. In the beginning, they use their abilities to play pranks on random strangers. But the more confident they become, the stakes become higher and harmless pranks turn into long-awaited revenge.
A great element about the film is that it has perfect timing for both plot twists and action. It doesn’t bombard you with action scene after action scene. Instead, the viewer gets to know the characters and their distinct personalities. Of course, it wouldn’t be a true superhero without a kind hero and an attractive “bad boy” super villain.
Despite how good the storyline was, I couldn’t help feeling like the whole film was more of a great introduction rather than a complete story. There have been rumors of a sequel, while Fox network recently commented that they had hired Max Landis to write a sequel.
