Han Solo and Chewbacca join Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Disney recently bought Star Wars for 4 billion dollars. This franchise was 100% owned by the founder of Lucas Film, George Lucas. You might be wondering, why would Disney, a source of entertainment full of cartoons and morals, buy a sci-fi spectacular?
I personally think that Disney wanted to expand their audience. Matthew Costa, 7th grader at Dutcher, said, “I don’t like it because I don’t want to see Sleeping Beauty in a Star Wars movie.” Well, I don’t think that any princesses will be interrupting your movies. When Disney bought Star Wars, all that Disney is going to do is make sequels.
“I don’t like what they’re doing. It’s stupid. Disney has its own stuff so why make someone else’s creation theirs?” says Amy De Anda, 9th grader at Merced High.
Julia Lind, 9th grader at Pitman High says, “I think that Disney shouldn’t have bought Lucas Films. I especially think they should not make another Star Wars movie. Star Wars is great on its own and I feel that Disney is just going to introduce this new babied version of Star Wars that’s not really related to the originals. When I think of Indiana Jones or Star Wars, I don’t think of Disney. Steven Spielberg isn’t working on the movie which defeats the purpose as well. All the Star Wars films are by him. It’s not Star Wars without.”
So as you can tell, many people have strong opinions on the situation. So why did Disney buy Star Wars?
