A frequent question many high school students are asked is, “What do you plan on doing after high school?” An automatic response would be “college”.
The real question should be, “What college do you want to attend?”
Pitman hosts an annual College Night in the gym that is open to any students that have interest in their futures. This year, this nerve-racking event was on Thursday, October 3.
Mrs. Cornell, a counselor at Pitman high school, describes this event as, “a student shopping for colleges.” She goes on to say that this night is very important to many students and often “broadens their horizons.”
A PowerPoint was presented as an introduction to the audience, informing them of basic information such as; A-G requirement, G.P.A. standards, and graduation requirements.
Afterwards, students were let free to roam around the gym and to approach tables of different colleges or careers. Students walked from table-to-table and asked questions, while their parent or guardians hovered over them.
Over twenty tables were scattered around the gym with information on colleges or careers they represented. Some of the tables located throughout the gym included; CaliforniaStateUniversity, MercedCollege, FIDM, UC Davis, ModestoJunior College, FresnoState, the Navy, Us Army, and the Marines.
Isabel Sarhad, a junior at PitmanHigh School, stated how nervous she was about her future as she was walking into the gym. She had all of her questions answered before leaving.
Seviny Ganji, also a junior at PitmanHigh School, agreed with Ms. Sarhad’s statement, “I actually have a plan now for my future. With all these different colleges I was able to look at and ask questions; I now have a couple of colleges in mind for my future!”
The people who attended the College Night on Thursday finally have an answer to the question that haunts every teenagers mind, “What college will you be attending after high school?”
