Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum (ERWC), is a course designed by the CSU (CaliforniaStateUniversity) to prepare seniors for Freshmen Composition in college. It has been misunderstood by some students that by taking this class one can bypass Freshmen Composition in college, but this is untrue. With that being said, this class focuses mainly on in-depth reading and writing. Most of the works studied within the class are non-fiction. The class focuses on techniques for reading and composition and also helps students with analyzing different types of literature and come up with their own ideas.
This class can help open those ideas up and help students become involved in controversial conversations; it could definitely help students prepare for college.
Although ERWC is quite like English 12, do not get the two confused because ERWC students partake in significantly more reading and writing, however, maintaining the same amount of essays as English 12. While both classes have their benefits, ERWC has an advantage to regular English 12 because one has a clean, easy way to get into Freshman Composition. Of course to be a little ahead, students would have to try their best, so if a student scored a 2-conditional on the English Advanced Placement Test (EAP) or passed ERWC with a C or better the student could go straight into Freshman Composition and bypass the English Placement Test at most CSU’s.
Currently, Ms. Silva is the only teacher who teaches this class, but more teachers are being trained for this. There are presently 140 students taking this class, which is a huge difference compared to the 78 students who took it last year (2012-2013). It has really grown and hopefully will continue to grow because of the great benefits it provides. For more information one can refer to the following link:
