The news of wearing ID cards spread like a wildfire near the end of 2012-2013 school years. Many students complained that these name tags were unnecessary and would not be a help to the school. While students complained about the unimportance of these name tags, the administrators stressed the importance of them. Figuring out whether or not they truly were useful was left for the following school year to determine.
Pitman students received their name tags within the first couple weeks of school. In the beginning it was a battle to force kids to wear these. Many would say they “forgot it” or they simply would respond with comments such as “I don’t care”. The school had expected this to be a problem so there was a backup plan for those who happened to forget, it was a bright colored sticker that had your name written on it. Students who went to the activities office and requested one before first period would not be faced with consequences, but those caught not wearing them would be.
Preet Johal, senior at Pitman High stated, “Instead of wearing a sticker why don’t you just remember your name tags. It is really not something to fuss over. Whether or not we like them we will be forced to wear them, they are a school rule.”
With the name tag along came its consequences, since a handful of students protested to wearing them. The first consequence is simply a warning and a paper to activities to get a sticker with the student’s name. The second consequence is a call to the parents and another temporary name tag. The final would be detention or suspension depending on how many times the student had been caught and what punishment the school saw best fit for the situation.
Mrs. Cornell, a child development teacher stated, “I highly suggest you wear your name tags instead of dealing with the consequences.”
Although these name tags seem useless they contribute to the safety of the school and its students tremendously. Wear the name tags and don’t make them a bigger deal than they should be.
Preet Johal, a senior stated, “Instead of taking the time to complain about wearing your name tag; take that time to put it on.”
