Pitman High School has many diverse and interesting clubs. The Hispanic Youth Leadership Council (HYLC) is just one of the 35 active clubs at the school.
HYLC, like many other clubs, does a lot of community service work. The club already has something planned for the first month of 2014.
On January 29th, HYLC will be feeding the homeless through the We Care Program. HYLC has been working with the program for the last few years and they always schedule the project after the holidays.
HYLC’s advisor, Mr. Vincent Rosales explained that the club decided to feed the homeless after the holidays because “people are pretty open-here during the holidays and sometimes it’s afterwards that they need help the most.”
The project feeds about 30 men in need. HYLC’s members are solely in charge of figuring out what they are going to serve. They make and deliver the meals on their own.
Of course, parents are not only allowed but encouraged to help the club with the menu. Last year, parents worked together to make pozole and tamales.
While the club members serve food, some have the pleasure of conversing with some of the men. A few years back, Enrique Diaz participated in the event.
Speaking of the new experience, Diaz said that it was fun to meet new people. He had the chance to see how they live and learn how they ended up where they were. For example, one man told him that he had gone through a divorce that took everything from his wife to his son to his job.
So far this year, HYLC hasn’t finalized their plans, but are anticipating a productive month leading up to the event.
