Pitman High School held their annual Homecoming Week the week of September 29th through October 3rd. The theme was Clash of the Classes where underclassmen and upperclassmen competed against one another in interactive games throughout the week.
With Clash of the Classes, each dress up day was separated into two different themes that would be determined by your class. Monday started off with underclassmen as 80’s and upperclassmen as Hippies, then the next day it changed to Marvel v. Disney, Crazy Socks v. Crazy Hair, Jocks v. Nerds, and finally ending the week with the classes coming together for spirit day.
“My favorite part was seeing so many different students participate and all the fun dress up days. They really went out of their way to make their costumes above and beyond.” exclaims ASB Advisor Jennifer Olesen, remembering her favorite parts of the week.
Each day also included a different lunch-time activity. Monday, students competed in comedic game called Chubby Bunny, where the person to stuff the most jumbo marshmallows in their mouth and still be able to say chubby bunny would win.
Tuesday brought students from all edges of campus to come witness the Singing Bee, where the first group to run up and sing the next verse after the song ended would receive a point. This game was definitely a highlight of the week with the large amounts of participation and intensity among students from other classes.
On Wednesday students participated in an Obstacle Course that challenged their athletic ability and stamina. There were different stations set up around the quad that students had to complete, and the first one to finish would be the champion.
Finally on Thursday was Picnic on the Green, where a variety of students throughout campus came to the amphitheater to witness live musical performances. Additional activities involved our nominees at the dunk tank including Jordain Johnson (12th), Pitman student announcer, and an interactive game of Volleyball.
Friday’s rally began with performances from band and color guard. They were then followed by performances from a newly formed brass suicide group -consisting of only girls- and the original brass suicides that incorporated new techniques into their routine including a back flip by senior, Tyler Reeder (12th), which resulted in the crowd rising to there feet. Finally it was time for the Varsity Cheerleaders to take the floor.
Following these events were the announcements of Pitman High’s Homecoming Nominees by Barbara Beasley (12th) and Ben Marson (12th)-our MC’s for the rally-that introduced the students as they walked in pairs across the floor to center stage before taking their seats.
ASB students brought out the spirit can to see which class could make the most noise, and as usual, it was the roaring sound of Pitman’s upperclassmen that dominated. The games started out with Toilet Paper (TP) the Teacher, a game in which fall athletes were separated into pairs and assigned a teacher- two from each class. In the end it was none other than English teacher, Mrs. Smith, who was covered in the most toilet paper. Following TP the Teacher was a quick game of Tug-a-War where Pitman’s Varsity Football team came out on top. The final activity was the Tap Out Dance in which a large number of students volunteered to participate in the competition where they would have to dance to small segments of well-known songs while judges walk around, eliminating contestants, until one is left. One by one the students go back to the bleachers, until the only ones remaining were the Mascots that revealed a surprise dance to the student body.
Jordain Johnson (12th), our ASB President, came out to the center of the floor where he gladly revealed the winning class for this weeks lunch time activities: the seniors.
At last the moment had come when Pitman’s Homecoming royalty for 2014 was to be revealed. First they announced the prince, Steven Acosta followed by Homecoming King Branson Garcia. Then announced were the princess, Barbara Beasley (12th), and Homecoming Queen, Regan Wolfley (12th).
“I was, I guess surprised, I was just thinking oh my mom’s going be happy now. It’s a big deal to the women in my family,” commented Branson Garcia (12th) in an interview after winning Homecoming King.
Later in the afternoon, Pitman Pride’s Football Homecoming game against Salinas began. By the end of the first half it was seven to three, with a touchdown by Donovan Bravo (12th) and field goal from Salinas.
The half time show began with the announcement of Pitman’s Homecoming nominees. They were each escorted by a family member or someone close to them to the center field as a short description of who they are and their future plans were read. The nominees were spread out across the field with our Homecoming King and Queen standing at the 50 yd. line. Following were the performances from Pitman’s Band and Color Guard closing with a dance routine from Varsity Cheerleaders.
The game was full of excitement with overwhelming amounts of spirit from the Pit Crew and others sitting in the stands as they cheered for their Varsity team. Flags were being run up and down the field, students in green suits were pumping up the audience, and mini green footballs were being tossed into the crowd. Homecoming week ended with a triumph win for PitmanHigh School, ending the game with a score of 21-3. It was truly a game worthy of ending Homecoming.
