Marvel better watch out, because there’s two internet stars about to hit the streets of the superhero world, and they look awesome. Youtube’s Grace Helbig (It’sGrace) and Hannah Hart (MyDrunkKitchen) have teamed up with Legendary Digital Media and Fullscreen Inc. to recreate the 70’s superhero series Electra Woman and Dyna Girl.
According to Legendary, the plot of Electra Woman and Dyna Girl follow two superheroes from Akron, Ohio who move to Los Angeles, California in hopes of becoming big shot crime fighters. However, they come across other vigilantes and a bit of conflict arises.
The executive producers of the original EWDG series, Sid and Marty Krofft, are remaining active as the E.Ps in the reboot as well. and it will be directed by Chris Marrs Piliero.
“Grace and Hannah, Sid and Marty, Legendary and Fullscreen! This is basically our plot to break the Internet in 2015,” said George Strompolos, the founder and CEO of Fullscreen. “As we continue to expand our premium content strategy, we’re extremely proud to collaborate with such great partners and can’t wait to bring this amazing concept to fans everywhere.”
The internet is going crazy over the news of this reboot, as well as the two stars cast for the project. But something else caught the eye of the fans as well. The costume design. Unlike the major superhero studios, like Marvel or D.C Comics, the costumes for these two heroines are not overly sexualizing, but empowering.
A series about two female superheroes that isn’t focused on the physical appearance of the characters and actresses? Brilliant!
Throughout superhero film history, women have been used as an “object” to look at, rather than a strong lead character. This reboot steers away from the idea heroines are merely supporting the muscular male superheroes. This series might have an effect on traditional media and change the future of female superheroes and female leads as well.
Hank Green, another popular creator in the Youtube community, commented on Tumblr about the costume design.
“I’ve spent two days staring at the cover picture and I finally figured out why I like these outfits so much,” writes Green, “They look like super hero outfits styled for women. Not super hero outfits styled for men to enjoy looking at on women.”
This whole series is a big step for Legendary. With movies like Man of Steel and the recent Batman trilogy coming out of the studio, it will be interesting to see how they take on this new project, being that Electra Woman and Dyna Girl is their first female superhero pair.
“Legendary is no stranger to the world of superheroes and we’re excited that Sid & Marty Krofft’s Electra Woman and Dyna Girl will mark the first female crime-fighting duo for our brand. Partnering with Fullscreen to deliver top quality digital content for our global fan base is an exciting next step for our growing digital division,” said Greg Siegel, Legendary Digital Media’s Senior Vice President, Development and Production. “I look forward to seeing how Grace and Hannah bring these caped crusaders back to life.”
This should be a very exciting series for both Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart fans as well as superhero fans. Helbig and Hart, being as popular as they are on the internet, should bring a new modern feel to the series, while hopefully staying true to the original. With the cast, the plot, and even the really awesome costumes, this series sounds like a recipe for success. Fans of either Grace Helbig or Hannah hart, or even superheroes in general should give this reboot a shot.
