PHS boys’ Varsity and Junior Varsity soccer teams had a successful season this year.

The Varsity team won 17 games throughout the season, with only 7 losses and 4 tied games.

The Junior Varsity team won 10 games for the season and tied 2 times, losing only 8 matches.

This season, the Varsity soccer team went to Sac-Joaquin section playoffs in November.  They won Bella Vista High School in the first game. The score was 2-0.  The second game was against Ponderosa and Pitman won with a score of 3-1.  In the semifinals, they lost to Rocklin High School in a neutral game. The score was tied at 0-0, but Rocklin beat them in penalty kicks and advanced.

This year was Assistant Coach Cesar Mercado’s 8th year of coaching the boys’ varsity soccer team.

Whenever things got difficult for the team, Coach Mercado made sure to keep the players going. “I encourage the team to do their best. You know? Keep reminding them that they’re great,” he said.

“I think in the semifinals we could have done better,” commented sophomore Edward Olivera, the center midfield for the varsity team.

“It was a great group.  There was an obvious mutual respect between the players and me, the coach,” said Coach Mercado with a hint of pride.

Coach Mercado said he was “beyond satisfied” with the season and the team.

Pitman High is proud of their soccer teams and cannot wait for next season! We wish our senior soccer stars good luck outside of high school!
