The Jungle Book

A classic Disney animated movie was brought to life in a very astonishing and creative way this year. The Jungle Book.

This remarkable remake was released on April 15th of this year. It starred Neel Sethi as the main character Mowgli, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Bill Murray as Baloo, and Idris Elba as Shere Khan. These are just a few the stunning cast.

With the rise in technology, a lot of childhood movies are now being remade in “live action”. The Jungle Book was no exception. Although many may argue that this movie isn’t really “live action” because of the digital animations.

The movie begins with exciting action right of the bat. Mowgli, a man cub who was raised by wolves, is being chased through the beautiful and mysterious forest. The audience is shown the amazing setting of the movie as well as how remarkably realistic the animals look.

The main plot is developed when the Peace Rock scene begins. The jungle rules and morals are refined and the characters are developed. As all the animals gather around the Peace Rock (a rock that allows all animals to come together in peace and drink from the same lake) Mowgli is the obvious outcast and is noticed by Shere Khan, the monstrous tiger.

Mowgli receives a threat by Shere Khan who craves vengeance on this boy, and is forced to leave his wolf pack in order to protect them. This is when Mowgli’s adventure starts. He is guided by the wise black panther, Bagheera.

After Bagheera and Mowgli are forced to separate, the original characters are introduced. Kaa, (Scarlett Johansson) the seducing python, captures Mowgli and shows him how he was found in the forest as an infant. The audience is also revealed crucial information on why Shere Khan desires vengeance on Mowgli so badly.

Another key detail is revealed in the scene. The animals believe the humans to be the “top of the food chain,” not only because of the hunting and killing but because of a special element they refer to as the “red flower.” Kaa describes it as something “beautiful and delicate”, but scenes of wildfires and animals fading away to the fire are quickly shown.

Jon Favreau, the director, took the opportunity to demonstrate the dangers of fire and to really get the audience to see the destruction humans cause to the animal’s lives. Favreau’s uses messages throughout the whole movie on the dangers of wildfires.

Baloo is introduced after he saves Mowgli from being eaten alive by Kaa. This whimsical character is a

“sleepy brown bear” that has a huge impact on Mowgli’s character development. Although Mowgli is blackmailed by Baloo when they first met, they form an amazing friendship. The famous “Baloo The Bare Necessities” song is also in the movie.

After Bagheera and Mowgli finally reunite, Mowgli refuses to go to the man village. Later that night, Mowgli does something very heroic which gains Bagheera’s deep respect.

Mowgli is starting to gain confidence in his “man tricks’ that were put down by his wolf pack leader Akela (Giancarlo Esposito).

Bagheera and Baloo race to save Mowgli from the monkeys that captured him. He is later found in King Louie’s (Christopher Walken) temple. King Louie reveals something very powerful and beneficial to Mowgli. So Mowgli races to a man village to obtain his secret weapon after he finds out about a devastating death in his wolf pack.

The final scene is the nail biting fight between Mowgli and Shere Khan. The dramatic ending really tugs your heart and makes you feel like a child watching your favorite movie for the first time.
