The SAG Awards, which took place for the 23rd annual time on Sunday, January 29th, is an accolade ceremony in which outstanding performances in film and television are recognized by the Screen Actors Guild.

Most Hollywood awards shows consist of the usual proceedings – celebrities flaunting their designer dresses on the Red Carpet and powerful, tear-jerking speeches from the year’s winners.

This year’s awards included all that and more as celebrities such as Ashton Kutcher took their air time as an opportunity to remark on politics, more specifically – President Trump.

Kutcher began the night with his opening remarks with his opinion on the immigrant ban, “Hello to everyone watching at home and in airports that belong in my America. You are part of the fabric of who we are, and we love you and welcome you empathically.”

As the awards went on, winner for the year’s best film and television performances were announced.

For Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, Hidden Figures, an inspirational film about the untold story of the women behind NASA’s historical launch into space, took the win.

“This story is about unity, this story is about what happens when we put our differences aside. We win, love wins, every time, says Taraji P. Henson, who plays Katherine Johnson, as she accepted the award.

Denzel Washington, a Hollywood favorite for his past roles in films such as Flight and Remember the Titans, took the award for his Outstanding Performance as a Male Actor in a Lead Role for his powerful performance as Troy Maxon in Fences.

For the same award but for a female actor instead, Emma Stone wins for her outstanding role in La La Land, a romantic musical starring Ryan Gosling.

As she accepted her award, she stated, “We’re in a really tricky time in the world and our country and things are very inexcusable and need action, and I feel very grateful to be part of a group of people who cares and wants to reflect things back to society.”

Stranger Things, a Netflix original series that took the world by storm for its intriguing plot and likeable cast, was awarded Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

One of the award’s most important accolades, the Lifetime Achievement Award, was given to Lily Tomlin, a longtime actress most recently known for her role in the Netflix series, Grace and Frankie.

Previous winners of the special award include Debbie Reynolds (2014), Julie Andrews (2006), and Clint Eastwood (2002).
