As society seems to be getting much more sensitive about what is said, written, or tweeted, it’s not surprising that South Park, a show that is known for its (sometimes extremely over exaggerated) parodist view of current events, would tackle society’s over-sensitivity head on. As 2015 starts to end, South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are left with a wealth of topics to choose from, such as Political Correctness and Deflategate, to use in their 19th season of the 2nd longest running animated show.

The first episode, Stunning and Brave, introduces us to “PC Principal”, the new principal at the children’s school, who wants South Park in its entirety to change its ways and become politically correct (meaning refraining from anything that could be interpreted as offensive to race, gender, and ethnicity).  However, most South Park fans know this is humorous, as most of the show’s comedy relies on NOT being politically correct. PC Principal calls out the people of South Park for their use of stereotypes, mentioning how the people let Tuong Lu Kim (actually the alternate Chinese persona of Dr. William Janus), act like a Chinese man with a stereotypical accent and a general hatred of Mongolians.

What South Park manages to do well is show the hypocrisy of the PC movement. The PC movement, represented as PC Principal and his drunken fraternity, threatens anyone who disagrees with their beliefs. PC Principal hands out detentions, and physically beats Eric Cartman after his use of stereotypes. Randy Marsh, Stan’s father, joins the fraternity, where he is hazed into PC ideas and joins into drinking games. The next scene shows Randy hungover, “throwing up” all the political correct ideas forced into him the night before.

As Cartman lays in his hospital bed after being beaten by PC Principal, he has a dream. Cartman imagines himself as his hero, Tom Brady, as well as Patriots coach Bill Belichick and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. This scene accurately sums up the 8 months of court hearings in a less than a minute. All that is to be heard is Brady and Belichick attacking Goodell for breaking the rules finding out that the Patriots broke the rules, while Goodell claims the Patriots broke all the rules.

The episode Safe Space introduces us to a “villain”, a masked man named Reality. The PC movement sings about living in their safe space, a room where anything outside of it does not apply to them. However, Reality shows up and begins to scare the characters, threatening to tear down their safe space. Later in the episode, he shows up at a PC event, and calls out Vin Diesel for his hypocrisy, stating that even though Vin Diesel spoke out about body shaming, showing off your abs is considered body shaming.

The next planned South Park episode will parody police brutality, as South Park decides to get rid of all of its police officers. It will be interesting to see how Stone and Parker play it out.
