Obama Addresses Refugee Issues

“We stand prepared and ready”

“This is an attack not just on Paris, it’s an attack not just on the people of France, but this is an attack on all humanity and the values that we share.” These are the powerful words said by President Obama soon after the attack on Paris on November 13th.

Some U.S. citizens fear the incoming flood of refugees, fearing they are somehow apart of ISIS. However, President Obama quickly put the American people at ease when he reminded the American people what the United States stand for and what separates the U.S. from ISIS with the statement that the refugees are “a nation of many people of different faith, which means we show compassion to everybody.”

Even though there is a risk coming with accepting refugees, the U.S. stands prepared seeing that refugees are let in only after rigorous screening and security checks. Some Americans look at the refugees as a problem, but Obama surely changed their mind when he said “refugees are victims of terrorism themselves, that’s why they are fleeing.”

After President Obama’s speech there were some arguments on what it was going to take for Paris to get back on its feet. Obama appreciates the strong relationship that has been established with France, and proclaims that “the United States needs to step up and do its part.” This would mean taking in even more refugees and giving more to France as well as coming up with new strategies to speed up the healing process for Paris.

Strategies have been playing a big role in the United States but apparently not a big enough role to the reporter who questioned the effectiveness of the current strategies being used. Obama replied by saying, “the strategy that we put forward is ultimately the strategy that is going to work.’

There are going to be a lot of arguments and discussions about what is best for the U.S., but of course America should not forget that, in Obama’s words, “ the values we are fighting against ISIS for are precisely that we don’t discriminate people because of their faith.’’
