The Revenant

“Gritty” “Raw” and “Grueling” are just some of the words used to describe the newly released film The Revenant directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarri’tu, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. It is living up to everything it was expected to be.

The film is based on the 2002 novel by Michael Punke that tells the tale of tragedy, betrayal, and most importantly vengeance.

The film centers around a frontiersmen in the 1820’s by the name of Hugh Glass (Leonardo Dicaprio) who is guiding a group of men on a fur trading expedition along with his Native American son Hawk (Forrest Goldluck) only to be robbed by a group of Pawnee (Native Indians) and viciously mauled by a bear.

When Glass’ fellow frontiersmen realize they can’t bear to keep trailing Glass along due to his severe injuries, they decide to award two of the men John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) who is a greedy, unsympathetic man that has it out for Glass and his son and Jim Bridger (Will Poulter) a naive boy, to stay with Glass and his son until he passes away or until he is well enough to travel back home.

Unfortunately when Glass is left to die by his so called fellow frontiersmen, he begins his journey through intolerable conditions to seek his vengeance on the man who took everything from him.

The violent gruesomeness of the film is what makes it so vivid and compelling to watch. Moviegoers who are seeking a tale of tragedy and raw emotion will certainly love the film. Dicaprio and Hardy’s stellar performance make the film sensational.

The film was a very demanding one considering the fact that the director Inarritu wanted to keep the film as natural and raw as possible. The actors had to endure freezing temperatures in over 12 different filming locations.

The high expectations and demand for this film is what made it such a thrill to watch and even paid off in the end with over $2.3 million in the Box Office.

The Revenant won three Golden Globe awards for best director (Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu), best actor (Leonardo Dicaprio), and best picture. The film certainly did not go unnoticed and is one that can’t be missed.
