Sam Smith accepted his Oscar for best original song called “Writings on the Wall” which was featured in the movie “Spectre” and explained what an honor it was to be the first openly gay man to accept it. This was quite the shock to Dustin Lance Black, who was  actually the first gay man to accept an Oscar for best writing and original screenplay in 2008 for the movie “Milk” and was quick to reassure Sam of his mistake.

Shortly after the mishap Sam smiths Twitter was overflowing with comments about how he had mixed things up. “Did #SamSmith really say no gay person has ever won an Oscar before? Kevin Spacey’s won two! #Oscars”

Because of the amount of hate and negativity Smith was getting he decided to log off Twitter for a bit after posting “I’m logging off for a while. Some Martinis shaken not stirred are definitely in order.”

Smith did not fail to show his class when Dustin Black called him out on his speech. While Mr. Black was what seemed like ‘telling off’ Sam Smith , Smith replied with “Apologies for the mix up @DLanceBlack I’ll be sure to check out your films now x Belated Congrats on the Oscar x,” making Dustin look immature.

Although this is a little setback for Sam, this only proves even with his accomplishments and awards he’s received that he’s only human and mistakes are bound to happen.

In spite of this embarrassing moment, Will Rogers, who hosted the 6th Academy Awards ceremony in 1934 embarrassingly introduced the best director award by saying “Come up and get it Frank” This harmless comment caused a confusion since there were two Frank’s in the running for the award: Frank Capra for Lady For A Day, and Frank Lloyd for Cavalcade.

Everyone makes mistakes from time to time. This was just Sam Smiths time. This was a big day not only for Smith but the LGBT community as well. Sam continues to show his support and love for what he does and what he believes in.

Throughout this horrific moment for Smith, he did not fail to put on a show for his fans.
