20 years after the OJ Simpson murder trial shook the nation. FX’s new biographical drama series on the subject, The People V OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, blew the ratings out of the gates.

The show, created and directed by Ryan Murphey (director of other well-known shows like Scream Queens and American Horror Story), is based off the book The Run of His Life: The People V OJ Simpson (written by Jeffery Toobin) follows the lawyers on both sides of the case and tells the well known story from their perspective.

The starstruck cast consists of Cuba Gooding Jr., who plays Simpson. AHS star Sarah Paulson plays Marcia Clark, the edgy prosecutor. John Travolta playing Simpson’s star prosecutor Robert Shapiro, Courtney B. Vance as Johnnie Cochran and lastly, David Schwimmer (best known as Ross Geller on Friends) as Robert Kardashian.

The premiere episode opened up with a barrage of footage from the Rodney King riot to show that citizens in Los Angeles were upset.

Our first introduction to Cuba Gooding Jr.’s portrayal of OJ was through the eyes of a starstruck limousine driver.

A few days after Cuba Gooding Jr.’s long awaited portrayal of OJ Simpson, the actor received a review from him most important critic- Simpson himself.

Because Simpson is behind bars for armed robbery in Nevada, Gooding has not had direct contact with the former football player.

Andy Coehn, host of Watch What Happens Live, asked Gooding if Simpson saw the show. Gooding says that Simpson himself has never seen the show, but Simpson “feels indifferent about the portrayal.”

The premiere of the series set an FX viewership record for original drama with 5.11 million viewers.

The 7 episode biographical drama airs Tuesdays on FX.
