Recently in Hot Springs, Arkansas, two 14-year-old boys have been accused of raping a fellow student, a 16-year old girl on campus at Lakeside High School. The boys entered a not-guilty plea Tuesday afternoon.

The two boys are currently being held at the Garland County Juvenile Detention Center and their next hearing will be on March 11. The police statement said they stand charged with rape but it is still unclear whether they will be charged as adults or minors.

The 16-year-old girl spoke to the authorities and told them the two boys grabbed her on her way to athletic practice. They pushed her into the girl’s locker room and sexually harassed her. She reported this on Thursday a day after the alleged incident.

“One of the boys stood behind her so she couldn’t move. The victim stated that she was asking them to let her go but they refused.” According to the confession, “She continued to attempt to get away but could not. The victim stated that after approximately 2 minutes, she was able to break free and run outside”

Bobby Dingler’s girlfriend has a daughter that attends Lakeside High School and he feels, “pretty shaken up about the whole deal, about the safety and about what happened… probably the comforting deal is that my girlfriend knows the accused teens are not going to be at school anymore.”

The Hot Springs Police Department as well as the school district will not be releasing any more information on this case.

Rape is the most underreported crime in the United States. Almost one in four women will experience sexual assault in her lifetime, and most of rape survivors are young women and girls. 80% of rape survivors are under age 30, 42% of female rape survivors were first raped before age 18, and girls ages 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be survivors of rape or attempted rape.

About 15% of freshman women reported an attempted or completed rape during their first year on campus and 18.6% when researchers accounted for women who reported more than one event, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

Sexual harassment happens every two minutes in the United States and it is a traumatic experience. Many celebrities like Lady Gaga have used their experience with sexual harassment to cause a positive effect.

Lady Gaga’s latest performance at the Oscars of “Till It Happens To You” was extremely powerful and gave an influential voice to survivors of any sexual harassment. Mid-performance a small group of rape survivors came out with quotes on their forearm saying, “It’s not your fault” and “unbreakable.”

She has since become an important face of helping to stop sexual harassment and abuse in general. Rape is a very serious problem and people need to become better educated on this topic and more aware.
