Hold onto your phones and hug them tight everyone, because it could transform into one of the haunting storylines on an episode of Black Mirror, the two season anthology series currently streaming on Netflix.

Taking place sometime in the future, Black Mirror focuses on how technology controls, manipulates, and ruins the lives of the individuals that use it. Also, it shows how certain technological advances can shape and change the ways our society works.

The highly praised series originally aired in the UK, and is currently streaming on Netflix. After its increased popularity on Netflix, the show was signed on for a third season, including 12 brand new episodes; unlike its past two seasons, only including three episodes per season. The next season has no set premiere date, but should be ready to stream sometime later this summer. Charlie Brooker, the mastermind behind the show, will also be coming back to write even more dark and thrilling stories.

Each episode of Black Mirror is irrelevant to the next, meaning there is no complete storyline in each season. In many ways, it is a lot like The Twilight Zone, each episode tells its own unique story, and adds high amounts of science-fiction and suspense to keep the audience interested and on the edge of their seat.

The first episode, “The National Anthem” tells the story of how social media has taken over the way that high-powered figures execute the decisions they make. In the episode, Princess Susanna is kidnapped for ransom by an activist group. In exchange, the Prime Minister of the UK must have intercourse with a pig on live television. In the end, the PM does the act, and after finds out from his sources that the Princess was released thirty minutes before he went on T.V. In the conclusion of the episode, one year later, the Prime Minister’s’ popularity is at an all-time high, but his wife will not speak to him in private, out of embarrassment.

If this series sparks interest in you, do not be misled by the first episode; while it takes on the form of the message the show is trying to get across, it still does not show what the show can really do. If you need an episode to get you interested in the show, the start off with episodes two or three of the first season; both of these really convey the idea that the show is aiming for. Also remember that these episodes have no relation to each other so viewers can watch them in any order that they wish.

Black Mirror will be streaming on Netflix for a while, so make sure you get a chance to see this thrilling, science fiction filled series before the new season streams. Make sure to see it now. Because this fantasy may one day become a reality.
