The Legacy of Loki the Corgi
October 3, 2016
Perhaps the saddest event in the animal news of 2016 has occurred. On the evening of September 19th, Loki the Corgi passed away after a year-long fight with a chronic kidney disease.
Loki, a Pembroke Welsh corgi from Vancouver, was a huge hit on Instagram. His huge fan base of over seven-hundred-thousand followers always enjoyed Loki’s adorable videos and photos.

According to the Loki the Corgi website, “His undeniable cuteness and creative content have led him to become the most followed Corgi on social media, with a combined following of over 1.4 million.”
When Loki was not too busy being adorable (face it, he was never not cute!) he was also the face of many cute dog products such as Barkbox, a monthly toy pack subscription ordered through the mail, and Pooch Selfie, the way to get the perfect selfie with a dog.

As mentioned above, Loki was diagnosed with a chronic disease over a year ago. Even through his troubling times, Loki seemed to be having the time of his life with his parents, Tim and Viv. He continued to post his usual adorable pictures in tulip fields and raincoats.
This is why it was such a shock for his followers when, on Monday, September 19th, Loki’s owners posted a note saying, “Loki’s kidneys are in serious condition and he is currently in the emergency hospital. Please pray.”
Shortly before this terrible news, Loki’s had owners started a Go Fund Me to help cover some of the expensive dialysis costs. After the shock, Loki’s faithful followers responded by donating at huge rates in hopes of helping the beloved corgi.
From Buzzfeed: “Well, people came through. And together they donated $33,687 toward Loki’s recovery. The goal was $15,000.”

Loki received his dialysis, however the next day even more heartbreaking news rolled in.
According to Loki’s owners via Instagram, “Loki’s in a better place now. Away from sickness and away from pain. We’ll miss him forever.”
Even after this statement was posted, people still continued to donate to the Go Fund Me. The campaign has since stopped receiving donations.
Loki was not just some corgi or an Instagram star, he was an inspiration. He brought smiles to the faces of all the people following him. He encouraged everyone to express themselves and to be happy.
Rest in peace, Loki the corgi. No one will ever forget you.
