Bisexuality Awareness week only happens once a year from September 19 to the 26, and was also cofounded by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Determination).

The week aims to celebrate the bisexual community, its culture and history. Three bisexual right activists in the US had started the International Awareness Celebrate Bisexuality Day in 1999. Records show that several cultures throughout history openly have embraced bisexuality, in the recent years of the LGBT community.

Julian Gomez a PHS Senior said, “Bisexuality is being emotionally and physically attracted to both genders.”

This week is known to be for the bi+ in the community to become more visible. To also promote the rights of the bisexual people in the community.

Felix Jara, a PHS senior said, “Bisexuality week has a great impact on our community and society all around us, but also on educating people on the concept of bisexuality and that’s the biggest impact that it can ever have.”

The main purpose of this very week is to bring visibility to a community that has been ignored and that has been discriminated against.

Gomez & Jara said that they both believe that the only reason why it has been discriminated before is because people have only seen it one way and can’t accept it any other, but with this awareness week it allows all to be accepted no matter what gender or what you become to be as a human being. That all are accepted as whom they are.

On the twenty third of the week GLAAD, Bi Net USA, and other LGBT and Bisexual advocate organizations. They hold active events on that day that include discussions, workshop and conferences that talk about a major part of the history and culture of the bisexual community and also address the issues faced by it itself.

LGBT is said to have organizations like a public outreach and education programs that inform you and the public about this day. These organizations also hold lobbying events where they reach out to the local governments and representatives to consider issues facing the bisexual community as of their policy.

Social Media has also taken a turn to it today on websites such as seen on Blogs like “#Biweek 2016 Celebrate Bisexuality” by GLAAD or as Youtubers like Tyler Oakley and Connor Franta have taken part of on their own channel, also Twitter, Instagram etc.

On those social websites and media, celebrities and people around the world have reached out about their own life experiences and what their view or what their specific meaning of that week really means to them.

This year in 2016, is the 18th annual Celebrate Bisexuality Awareness Week, that has just passed this second to last week of September. People around the world have now shown their own love and support to this historical week for over several cultures that has openly embraced bisexuality even till’ this very day.

Jara imparted this advice to anyone who is scared to proudly announce their sexual orientation:

“To not ever label yourself if you’re not sure, because it’s easier to become comfortable with who you are yourself, and to figure out what your situation is after.”
