The life of upperclassmen at Pitman can include rigorous classes and stressful college applications, but one factor that dominates their life outside of school may also be employment. Regardless of their other priorities, most upperclassmen have taken up the responsibility to manage a part time position at a workplace.

Whether it is at a fast food chain like McDonalds or a clothing store like JC Penny, these six, seven, and eighteen year olds are experiencing the hardships of adulthood at an early age. They are showcasing the ideals of our Pride community such as hard work, trustworthiness, and respectfulness in their everyday life!

I had the pleasure of interviewing two outstanding students who are participants of numerous clubs and taking advanced classes. Consistently maintaining a job at a workplace and also maintaining good academic grades is beyond incredible.

The following is a transcript with both a senior who has been working for a year (and wishes to remain anonymous) as well as a junior who in addition to maintaining good grades and a job, also happens to be an active member of the Associated Student Body and class president, Noor El Nounou.

  1. Where do you work and when did you get this job?
    1. Anonymous: I have been working at Kentucky Fried Chicken in downtown Turlock for a year and a half now
    2. Noor: I work at Tilly’s and I started working a week after my 16th birthday

  1. How many hours do you work in a week?
    1. Anonymous: Now that school has resumed, I have only been working for four hours on three weekdays. It’s different on weekends, so my hours vary.
    2. Noor: I only work on the weekends so about nine hours a week

  1. How do you handle your academic work and other priorities?
    1. Anonymous: Right after work, I begin my homework and keep things like tv as a reward for completing important tasks.
    2. Noor: I have to stay organized and manage my time wisely. I also played around with my schedule and saw what works for me.

  1. What are your grades?
    1. Anonymous: I am actually doing pretty well in all my classes. On average, I get four A’s and two B’s.
    2. Noor: All A’s!
  1. What advice would you give to other Pitman students who are entering the work field?
    1. Anonymous: Getting a job will make your life more hectic, so always remember to focus on academics. Prioritize and plan ahead!
    2. Noor: Do what you can handle and stay organized while always maintaining good grades, a positive attitude, and a smile!

Although these students face hours of school and homework, they never fail to show responsibility in all aspects of their life. Let this be a lesson for all freshmen and sophomores who yearn to soon apply for jobs and make money! Education should be your first priority and learning how to manage time will prove to be a beneficial skill in your near future.
