Growing up, there have been many different opinions about how students feel about high school. Some people love it and some people don’t. As students go from freshmen all the way to seniors, they feel different about the school and being a student as time passes. Starting off as a freshman in high school can either be frightening, exiting, stressful, or easy for students.

Most often times, upperclassmen seem to be used to high school. Most would say that coming into high school as a freshman is more challenging than middle school. They all  would agree that they thought it was stressful in the moment, but as they got older, they noticed it was really easy.

Freshmen don’t have experience being in such a bigger school but they usually hope that it’s fun and are not let down. In past experience, freshmen always seemed to be excited for high school. They said high school was different than middle school but in a good way.

Viviana Del Real, a freshman here at Pitman High, said that freshman year is a little bit difficult but rather more fun than middle school.

“The rallies, football games, and events like that make high school more fun, but in middle school, you’re a lot closer to your friends and the work you have to do in your classes is easier,” explained Viviana.

High school events are much more exciting than middle school events which according to student, were very boring and a waste of time. Girls especially, like being able to eat spaghetti straps to school and not get in trouble for it.

Others said that they think middle school is better than high school because they knew most people walking down the halls and because they missed being at a school with all of their friends before they were seperated.

Most adults agree that they had been nervous their freshman year and that it ended up better than expected. Generally, adults have the full high school experience and miss being younger. They wished they could go back to high school if they got a chance.

“I would do almost anything in the world to go back to my high school years,” said Jessica Rodriguez, an elementary teacher.

Students have different experiences in high school as they enter this new environment. It can be because of one’s attitude going into high school, how involved they are, or the students opinion of school in general. At the end of day, it really just depends on the student’s preference.

It’s clear that freshman are a lot more enthusiastic about high school and the new opportunities presented to them. So far, I would say that freshmen enjoy the transition from middle school to high school even though it’s a big change.
