How fast food affects your body & mind

Ah fast food! The best thing for people who don’t know how to cook or are too lazy to do! Fast food has become a huge part of society because of its low prices and convenience for everyone. While there are many benefits to fast food, it could also be a danger to your health if consumed often!  Eating fast food, while may be convenient could eventually hurt you by having certain negative effects on your body and mind.

What a lot of people don’t know is what is in fast food and if it is healthy. Fast food carries a lot of unhealthy fat and added sugar. It also has large amounts of carbohydrates and salt. It is also known that fast food products are low in nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. For example, McDonalds big breakfast with hotcakes has 1150 calories and thinking about how much of that is added sugar and unhealthy fats is terrifying. Knowing that, it’s interesting to know if there are negative effects.

Now, every now and then it isn’t bad to eat fast food, especially if people are too busy or forgot to make lunch. But if we are eating it constantly, it will start to have negative effects on our body.

One negative effect would be poor health because people are not getting enough nutrition in their body. People will also start to gain weight since there are a lot of unhealthy fats in the food.

Another problem is gaining more acne than normal because of constantly eating out. Individuals also gain respiratory problems, shortness of breath, and have a chance of getting a heart disease or stroke. High blood pressure is also a problem because of there being so much sugar in the food.

While we know how it affects our body, what we don’t know is how it affects our mind. In studies that I have found it states that eating fast food is linked to depression. A study done by the University of Granada states that consumers of fast food, compared to those who eat little or none, are 51% more likely to develop depression. This is a serious matter, especially if those already depressed are eating fast food daily. They can also cause headaches, which if you have them often, you know how dreadful they are.

When interviewing Senior Rebeca Ochoa, I asked how often she ate fast food and if she thought fast food was healthy. She responded saying “ I eat twice a month” and “ I think fast food is somewhat healthy because they often have diet menus, such as In-N-Out.”

While there are some people who, like Rebeca have the opinion that fast food is somewhat healthy, there are others who believe and argue that eating fast food is very unhealthy and can cause problems involving your body and mind. Just remember, while it may not be a problem, if people continue to eat fast food constantly it can ruin people’s health mentally and physically…
