Winter Sports Come to an End

Adrienne Navarette (12th), Editor

As Winter Sports come to an end, we wanted to shed some light on their achievements and hard work. All athletic teams here at PHS have done great work through the season and deserve to be recognized!

Wrestling

Wrestling is now in its postseason. PHS has 12 people in total on this team (one person per weight class is allowed). During League the top 4 wrestlers went to Divisionals. Divisionals however, is much larger and includes all of the San Joaquin sections. Next, the winning wrestlers go to Masters which will be held this Friday and Saturday (2/21 and 2/22) at the Stockton Arena. The top 6 wrestlers from these matches will compete at the State Championships (held from the 27th of February to the 29th). The wrestlers competing in the Masters this weekend are the following: Conner La Rosa, Kendall La Rosa, Alex Talamante, Julian Rosales, Aaron Lucatero, Jonathan Stout, Isaiah Ontiveros, Talwinder Malhi, D.J. Khalid, Juan Mora, Emilio Gutierrez, and Israel Tubera.

Connor La Rosa who placed 2nd in the 128lb weight class at Divisionals gave insight

¨Definitely one of our best years. We brought home the banner and beat the crap out of everyone in our league. We think we’re going to send a lot of people to State this year.”

Boys and Girls Soccer

Soccer has now reached its end.  After a successful season for both teams, PHS soccer headed to playoffs this past week. Both the Boys and Girls soccer teams have practiced intensely to prepare themselves which meant longer hours and longer workouts. The Boys Soccer team had remained undefeated until the last game against Turlock High School. As for the Girls, they were defeated once by Enoch High School but had a come back and defeated Turlock at their last game. I was given a great opportunity of meeting two current soccer players: Hannah DeLay and Diego Lopez, here’s what they had to say about soccer season.

Diego stated,  ¨During season we did really good, we were undefeated until our last game.  Probably meeting new people was my favorite part of the season.¨

Hannah commented positively, ¨Probably beating Turlock was the best thing from this season because we haven’t beaten them in a very long time. ¨

Great job this season soccer players! Journalism supports you!

Boys and Girls Basketball

Boys basketball made it to the first round of playoffs, they played endgame, had a tough game against their last match but they finished strong and did Pitman High proud!

Dominick Rush, a player from the varsity boys basketball team shared his thoughts,

¨Compared to last year our season was pretty successful, we had our ups and downs but at the end of the day we fought hard and competed; and most importantly trusted each other.¨

What a great way to end a season! Last but certainly not least, girls basketball, or should I say the CCal champs of  this year! Our varsity girls basketball team has worked extremely hard to get to this point. Overall, the team has maintained 22 wins with the helpful hand of Coach Dustin Curtis. They  came out of their comfort zone and played their best according to varsity girls player Abby DiGrazia.

She stated ¨Last year not everybody on the team contributed, but this year with our starting five, we had a really deep bench of just like everyone being able to do something. We didn’t have any deadweight. My teammates were my favorite part because everyone brought energy and connected, and we all did stuff outside of basketball, so it was really easy to play together.¨
