What Happened to Meghan Markle?

On March 7th 2021, Oprah Winfrey sat down with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and a part of the English Royals, to discuss their exit from the royal family. Meghan had a variety of claims regarding her experience and what happened in the royal family, today I’m going to break it down in simple terms.
The first claim was Archie’s courtesy title. When Archie was born Meghan believed he was supposed to receive the royal title of a prince. Once Archie was born, it was reported that Harry and Meghan didn’t allow this because of privacy reasons. During the interview with Oprah, Meghan came out and said that it wasn’t them who made that decision, it was the royal family that decided that for Archie.
**Note About Titles: The rules about who gets to be a prince and also be referred to as his royal highness (HRH) come from a letter patent issued by King George V in November 1917.
Letters patent are legal instruments which may take the form of an open letter from the monarch. They may be used for royal declarations or the granting of titles such as peerages.
In the 1917 letter, George V declared that the great-grandchildren of the monarch would no longer be princes or princesses, except for the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales.

According to the 1917 letter, Archie is entitled to become a prince – but not yet.
The children of Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, would have to wait until Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, became king, at which point they would be the grandchildren of the monarch and hence entitled to be princes or princesses (https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-56325934).

Meghan’s next claim is that she had to hand in her driver’s license and her passport to the royal family, and that it is not safe for her to drive by herself.

Next, in 2020 Meghan claimed that her security had been discontinued. They saw this as a problem because members of the royal family who are not in line for the throne get protection but not them.
There were also alleged racist comments from the royal family members. There had been concerns during the pregnancy with Archie and how dark the color of his skin might be. The comments were made by Princess Anne, Harry’s aunt. Princess Anne later came out and said those comments were a misunderstanding.
When Meghan was dealing with mental health issues, she turned to the palace HR department to see if they could help but wasn’t granted the help she needed because she wasn’t an employee. The news twisted a story, Meghan claims, saying that she made her sister-in-law (Princess Catherine) cry because of the flower girl dresses. Meghan claims that it was actually the opposite that occurred, Princess Catherine made her cry. She did say that Catherine apologized, however, it doesn’t change the fact that it happened.
Next, Meghan Markle claims that she had a private wedding ceremony before her wedding on television. The priest who she said officiated it stated that he did not do it, he only did the wedding that was televised.
Overall, the interview with Oprah was one that needed to happen. I feel like there needed to be somewhat of an explanation to why they decided to depart from the royal family. In the interview, there were some inconsistencies that came out later, but overall this gives a glimpse of what life was like for Lady Diana Spencer when she was in the palace.
