Flag Football is Coming to Pitman

Flag Football is Coming to Pitman

Pitman High School has offered a variety of sports for many years. Since the opening of Pitman High School in 2002, Pitman athletics have excelled and had success in multiple sports.

As of right now, there are twenty-three different sports that are offered to students of the Pride. Fall sports consist of boys football, girls golf, water polo, girls tennis, girls volleyball, and cross country. Winter sports consist of boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, and boys and girls wrestling. Spring sports consist of track and field, boys tennis and golf, softball, baseball and boys volleyball. Cheerleading is available as well.

Last year a new sport was added: boys volleyball. This not only provided the Pride with a new sport but it also provided diversity in the Pride’s athletic department. However, this upcoming fall a new sport will be added for girls: flag football.

Flag football, itself, has not been a part of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), for very long. In February of 2022, the CIF voted to make girls flag football a sport statewide. This made the state of California one of the eight states to offer girls flag football as a competitive sport option in high school. Plans started to form in fall of 2022 in the Sac-Joaquin section.

Locally, the schools that were a part of the CIF Sac-Joaquin section that offered flag football and competed were Patterson, Central Valley, Central Catholic, Escalon, Merced, Del Oro, and Atwater, to name a few. The season was quite successful with Del Oro winning the first ever girls flag football championship offered in the San Joaquin Valley.

On August 29, 2023, the CCAL (California Athletic League), held a leadership team meeting in which they discussed ticket prices, financial overview, and changes in locations of offices. The CCAL consists of Turlock, Pitman, Enochs, Gregori, Downey, and Modesto High Schools. In this meeting Assistant Commissioner of SJS Will Deboard explained that the league would be adding girls flag football next fall. Deboard said that “Currently 70 schools have flag football.” He also stated that “There will be two divisions of section championships” (ccal209.com).

Recently, there was a meeting that took place on Thursday March 15, 2024 regarding girls flag football. The meeting discussed the upcoming girls flag football season.
