Evolution of the Radio

Evolution of the Radio

Over the years radio has become less and less appealing due to apps like Apple Music and Spotify. The reason being that if you pay for these apps you pick whatever music you want whenever you want and without commercials. While this may be true, radios are still important to many people. There are some people that don’t want to pay for the subscriptions available or just simply can’t afford them.

Podcasts

In place of typical radio stations there has been an increasing number of podcast stations. These stations range from local news to debates to philosophy. The reason many people listen to podcasts is because they can provide information on interesting topics that someone wants to learn about.

One of my personal experiences with podcasts is learning about philosophy through podcast stations. I love listening to these podcasts talking about old philosophers and their books. Many times I use these podcasts in order to introduce myself to the topic and then dive deeper into it if I’m interested.

Podcasts can be such a useful tool as well to cut screen time. Instead of watching YouTube videos or TikTok as a pastime people can listen to podcasts and simply have it running in the background while they do homework or some other activity. Many people underestimate the use of podcasts and how valuable they can be.

Importance of radios

The extent to which the radio is important to someone is completely based on their opinion but this doesn’t mean the radio has no value in today’s day and age. While many individuals don’t listen to the radio, some people like the personalities behind radio stations and like hearing someone talk about the news and what’s going on around them in between songs. Commercials can get annoying when listening to the radio but a simple fix for that is just to change the station you are listening to and come back to it later.

Many people might argue that you can’t save the music on the radio or you can’t always listen to your favorite songs.

In an interview with my dad who used the radio a lot as a kid he even said that many times he finds that the radio plays the same songs over and over again. Additionally he said that when he was a kid he used to listen to the radio everyday and wait for the songs he likes to come on and back then you used to be able to interact with the radio stations by recommending songs. Another way the radio was more interactive back then was you used to be able to dedicate a song to your lover on the radio.

Over time the radio has changed and the importance of it has changed as well. This can be heartbreaking for those who grew up with the radio, like my dad.

iHeart radio app

Using the radio isn’t just limited to your car, there are apps you can download on your phone to listen to radio stations and podcasts, one of these apps is iHeart radio. This app is mostly popular due to it being free and containing many stations. As mentioned before there are stations that play certain genres of music. This app also allows you to search for certain artists and see what stations play the artist, so if you’re looking for artists similar to your favorite artist then you can simply find them through radio stations.
