Preview: Culture Week

On the 22nd of April there will be a Culture Week Fashion Show here at John H.Pitman High School. Here are some benefits of this fashion show. Starting off with this show allows people to feel more confident with who they are and where they come from. This show also reminds them that they are not alone and this fashion show is very precious to all the people involved.

Culture week is about embracing all cultures and showing the beauty within these cultures and their traditions. This fashion show involves clothing traditions of different backgrounds. The clubs that are involved are Assyrian Club, Black Student Union, Cultural Diversity, Hispanic Youth Leadership Council, Pan Asian Heritage Club, Pitman International Student Association, Portuguese Club, and Sikh Society. It’s actually a blessing that their are these clubs to embrace where you came from and what your culture is about. It is amazing that now society is more free and less judgmental and allows everyone to openly embrace their flags. Another thing that really stands out about these clubs is that they’re very hard working and also show a lot of effort by embracing who they are. Another activity Culture Week is providing is lunch time activities. I am also very excited for this because one of my friends are going to be in it. She is Filipino and she is going to hold a Filipino flag representing her culture.

It is also nice to meet other people with different cultures and backgrounds. I interviewed the mastermind behind all of this Mr. Brooks. I interviewed him and he gave me very valuable feedback.  The conversation was very long but also very useful.  Mr. Brooks has been wanting to have a day or week celebrating cultures for sometime. He said, “Culture week is to try to spotlight each other’s cultures and celebrate them.”  Mr. Brooks is also very happy and excited about this upcoming week.  Culture diversity is also doing the fashion show and is going to mostly focus on the Middle East. Two of the clubs that are also going to be the main focus of culture week Assyrian club and Pisa. Also since BSU is going to be in the fashion show they have decided to wear hiphop clothes. They will be expressing their cultural values to show that their cultures are important. Also, the activities at lunch for the culture week are going to be history related about each other’s cultures. There will be certain culture related sports, music, and food.
