The Importance of Art

The Importance of Art

Art is creative, expressive, and visually appealing to one’s eye. Art can have very many different meanings depending on the artist/creator. There are many different types of art, such as painting, drawing, clay, molding, wiring, sculpture, expressionism, impressionism, surrealism, abstract, photography, digital art, and more. There are also other arts that involve creativity such as writing and acting..

You can express many different emotions and feelings through art. Those emotions can be those you experienced or what you think they’re like. Emotions can be expressed through art even by sympathy. Doing art myself, I have been able to express my emotions and feelings through art. It has been fun and entertaining for me and succeeds in giving me a sense of peace. It also helped improve my personal growth.

This is an abstract painting I created in my art class. This piece is expressing two different emotions colliding into one which creates chaos and stress. I wanted this piece to show what feelings can create and how it can have a negative effect on one’s mind, and mental health.

I interviewed some art students here at Pitman to get their input and their personal responses.

Victoria Sanchez (12th) has stated after being asked: what is the importance of art, what does it mean to you? How can art express emotions? Victoria stated, “The importance of art is that it helps express emotions through what we as artists create and the experiences or ideas we share in our art. These experiences and ideas that we share in our work show the feelings and emotions to the topic with how the piece is showcased.” Her response was beautifully written.

When asked to explain what your art means or is expressing she responded, “My piece depicts a dream that I had about getting yelled at while working at a job. I used warm colors to show the anger and irritation from my boss while also using a lack of cool colors to show the absence of calmness in my piece.”

As she stated, you can definitely see all the warm colors expressing the stress this character is withholding and her boss yelling at her in the background. This piece is very creative and was well thought out.

Another student here at Pitman has their own response and agreed to stay anonymous. When asked, what is the Importance of art, what does it mean to you? How can art express emotions? They responded saying, “Art is important because it allows people to express themselves through their pieces. Art can evoke a sense of mood, happiness, sadness, despair, or it can send messages without words.”

Art is something that can allow you to feel who you are and where you stand. It gives you this calm sense of knowing that what you’re creating is something only you can make and create the way you’ve made it, nobody else. Art is greatly used as a coping mechanism as well. It can help clear your mind, calm you, and allow you to relax. If you really enjoy it, it’ll make you feel like everything is going to be okay. Art can do that. Art is a passion for many people. You can create art as something to keep and cherish, or to sell and expose; it can be made for business or made for your own fun and joy.

Isaac Rivera (12th) is an art student on our campus and when asked what is the importance of art and what does it mean to you? How can art express emotions” He said, “Art is important because it gives us meaning and helps us understand our world. To me art means taking a look into another person’s personality. Art can express emotion through many ways including but not limited to synthesis and expressionism.” Isaac was willing to share a photo of an art piece of his as well.

He calls this piece, The Confrontation and when asked to explain what your art means or is expressing, he responded, “In this art piece I am showing two parallels of my life and how they affect me. On the right it shows a past version of myself who was reckless, immature and had no plans for the future. Someone who hated being controlled and thought that running away from responsibilities was freedom. On the left it shows me in the present more mature and ready to move on with my life, but the reminder of my past self keeps me from being able to move on because that side of me still exists and is an internal conflict waiting for a confrontation.” You can see in this piece as if it’s two different people, very interesting and the topic was well represented.

Art is a multifaceted phenomenon, serving as a mirroring of our innermost emotions, feelings, and thoughts of the world around us. Sometimes when you take a drive through a town or city, you’ll notice art on walls, such as graffiti. Art is not just an expression of emotion but also a medium for communicating ideas. Which plays a role on how art can be therapeutic and helpful to our mental and emotional part of ourselves. So to sum it up – art can be just for entertainment and joy, awareness and self expression, it can help foster a community, and give enthusiastic reactions. Here are examples of graffiti art. Graffiti is commonly made on walls, but can be made on a canvas too.

Art can be very powerful and

very expressive. Especially when color theory is added in. Each color has a different representation, or mood that comes with the theory. Which is what makes the image created or displayed stand out more. It depends on what the artist is trying to represent and give off through their art.

Alexandra Santos (12th), a student here at Pitman responded to the question: what is the importance of art, what does it mean to you? How can art express emotions? Her response was, “Art is a way you can express yourself. It is a way for me to show my visions through my work. It can express emotion through color, presentation, shape, concept.” Here is an image of one of her beautiful pieces.

Her art is extraordinary and very expressive. She did a great job on her piece.

A student at Pitman named Josiah Flores (12th) responded to the same question: “The importance of art is to let out your creative side and try new styles and mess with what’s best for you. Artists can use different styles in color and lines to express their emotions.”

Another question was also asked: explain what your art means or is expressing. He stated, “My art could mean something different to every project. It’s mainly me just being creative and seeing what I can do with that certain style.” Lots of artists choose to be creative in this way. Some like to use visual still life items to draw or paint, others like to be original and come up with their own ideas. Art can be very inspirational to others. It can be inspirational by the moral of it, or just by the beauty of the piece.

This is why art is very important to society and why it should be valued and appreciated, as well as taken accountable and into thought a lot more.
