The new school year means a new ASB election so let’s see what the freshman class of 2029 has to offer the school. There are many people running for President and Vice, and it seems like event planner is also a popular position. This makes others wonder, will people vote for the most qualified candidate or the most popular candidate?
So, who really deserves a spot in ASB? Everyone did such an amazing job campaigning and making posters to help influence people to vote, students were able to see some from all the way across campus! Some students added things they wanted to do for the school in their posters and other students made funny posters with humor that other teens understand. Some students would definitely say that the posters that candidates made inspired them to cast their vote.
Many different students are running but some wonder why they are really going after the job. Many different students are running for ASB, but some wonder why they’re really running for it. Is it to satisfy their parents, prove something, gain the reward for winning, or do these candidates genuinely want to make a difference in our school’s student body? There are very few people who are actually passionate about a job like this. Is the class of 2029 easily influenced by popularity?
Lots of students voted for the more popular candidates, not saying that they weren’t qualified but students didn’t even look at candidates’ qualifications. Some candidates had previously been in ASB their middle school years, as for others who this election was their first time ever being in ASB. However, each candidate does have their reasons to run and their qualifications, so let’s take a look.
I interviewed 3 candidates the day before the results came out. First I interviewed Sasha Magoon, a freshman running for ASB President. I asked why she was running to which she replied with, “I want to be a part of the amazing things this school has to offer, and I want to make them even better, if that’s possible.”
Magoon was then asked why people should vote for her and her vice president, “People should vote for me because I care about what people are passionate about, whether it’s sports, drama, art, music, academics. I’ll make sure that funding goes to all and everyone is satisfied.”
Finally I asked Magoon what she and her vice would do to benefit the school and students, “I wanna make sure that everyone enjoys it here and isn’t bored. I wanna make sure that everyone is happy to come to school and people aren’t, you know, beefing, and people are happy.”
After that interview I spoke with Ava Pourkaldani, a freshman running for event coordinator alongside Emily Bice. Unfortunately I was only able to speak with Ava, and this is what she shared. When asked why she was running for event coordinator, Pourkaldani replied with a smile on her face, “I really want to get involved in the school and I feel like being in ASB is a great way to do that. I think event planner will be a lot of fun.”
When asked what events Pourkladani was looking forward to planning if she were to get the role, she answered with, “The higher grade you go, it’s like, the bigger events you get to plan. The seniors get to plan homecoming, and we [freshmen] get to help out with rallies and football games, and I’m really excited for that.”
To wrap up my interview with Pourkaldani, I asked why people should vote for her. She responded with, “I think people should vote for me because I am very involved in the school, I’m trying to meet new people. I also know that in middle school some people were disappointed with the events because some of them were fun, obviously, but some of them were also kinda boring. So I want to make sure that doesn’t happen in high school, because high school like, the end of your school basically.”
Lastly, to wrap up in the interviews I spoke with Evalyn Garcia who is running solo for social media manager. I first asked her why she was running, “I’m running for social media manager because I feel like I could bring a lot of ideas to the @igotopitman page and I also just enjoy posts and stuff.”
Most people are curious to what the social media manager actually does so I asked Garcia, along with what she was most excited about, “I’m in charge of all the posts that go out, obviously, and editing videos. So like the videos that you see about how to do good for your school, that’s what I’m going to be editing. I’m excited to just be involved too, I get to do other stuff too other than editing, like I get to be involved in school, like for homecoming, I get to be on the float and stuff, I get to walk and just like other stuff too, I get to plan a lot.”
To wrap it up I asked Garcia why people should vote for her. She responded with, “People should vote for me because, all, like I know certain people, they get so mad because they’ll see posts on the Pitman page and they’re lacking completely. With me, like, I’ll tell you, I’ll be like ‘Is it okay if I post this?’ and if they say no, obviously I won’t and stuff. I just feel like I could bring a lot of ideas to the table.”
Even though some of the candidates I interviewed didn’t win, I know they would have done an amazing job in ASB, and I know that the winners will do a fantastic job. People voted for them for a reason. I can definitely say that freshman ASB sure has a lot to offer.
