John H. Pitman High school is now allowing students to go off campus for lunch. There are a lot of arguments that students should have off campus lunch, although that is a neat idea there are just so many pros and cons.
One of the main reasons why we aren’t allowed to have off campus lunch is because of safety. Here at John H Pitman high school we take safety very seriously. What if something happens while you’re out getting lunch and we have no idea? How do we know you’re not bringing weapons or drugs to school?
The safety of our students is very important to us and we do not want to take any risk of our students getting into an accident or any risk happening to our school. Pitman has a very strict tardy policy and if the students don’t have good time management they can start being late to their classes. There are many ways to avoid being late, Everything still takes a very long time. You have to order your food, go to the place of your choice , wait for the food, and go back to school.
Around the time the students at Pitman high have their lunch many other people take their breaks at that same time. There is traffic and some people can be in a rush and cause an accident. Going back to school is going to be the hardest part because you also need time to eat your food. Some teachers here at Pitman are not as lenient as others and they won’t let you eat your food in class.
Some pros about having off campus lunch are, more food options and healthier alternatives. There are some foods at school you can’t eat due to health issues or religion reasons. Having lunch off campus can be a good idea because you can go home and eat the food you have prepared for yourself. Although you can bring your own lunch to school, it is still okay to want to go home and eat within your own comfort.
The way off campus lunch would work is for the students that are eligible. Meaning they have a perfect attendance (zero tardies) and have good grades (B’s and above) with meeting those requirements I think it would be okay to let those eligible students off campus. Off campus lunch wouldn’t be a choice, it would be a reward that you earn.
I had interviewed two seniors about the argument of off campus lunch. They both wanted to remain anonymous but what they both had to say was “that they think they should have off campus lunch because people should have more food options and it can lead to students having more healthier options, and some students are allergic and have many health issues so having off campus lunch will give them more of an advantage to eat instead of starving all day and eat till they get home and that not all people like school lunch.”
The idea of having off campus lunch would be a great idea, but unfortunately there are still so many risks so it’s very unlikely that we will not be having off campus lunch anytime soon, the TUSD district still provides us with good, healthy and nutritious food.
