On May 1, 2026 The Devil Wears Prada 2 was released, prior to the 20 year anniversary of The Devil Wears Prada released June 30, 2006. Directed by David Frankel and starring Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, and a short appearance from Lady Gaga, the sequel received an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In this sequel, Andy Sachs is laid-off after winning an award for investigative journalism. This story follows her life set two decades after the original, where she reconnects with her former spiteful boss and co-worker, Miranda Priestly and Emily Charlton. The main conflict of managing their physical magazines in the digital age and competing with a luxury brand represents the reality of the workforce being taken over by artificial intelligence.
Though fans have compared the sequel to the prequel, it seems this movie was made solely for nostalgic value. With a new plot and dynamic characters many viewers have stated that this modernized sequel seems like a completely different movie.
An interview from Karishma Khatri, a 9th grade student at Pitman, regarding her thoughts on the sequel were, “It was a pretty good movie, I like the plot and that in a way Miranda redeemed herself and became a better person towards Andy. One thing about it that I didn’t like were the outfits, some of them were a little questionable.”
When asked which movie she preferred, she responded with, “I feel like it would’ve been a lot better as a standalone movie. I prefer the prequel because it’s the original and the plot was a lot better, the outfits were a lot better and overall I really liked it.”
Sasha Magoon, a 9th grade student at Pitman, was asked what her thoughts were on the sequel, she responded with: “I think it was really good, I like it better than the first one because I felt like it was more modern and I understood the references. And, Anne Hathaway did not age a bit which is really scary but she looked gorgeous.”
After being asked what movie she thought was better, she responded with, “I would choose the second one for sure. I liked the first one but I feel like in the second one I was so engaging and I found myself bored watching the first one. I think all the actors did a really good job and I liked how Emily was in charge of her own thing and she kind of reigned it over Meryl Streep. I liked that because she was below everything [before] but she rose above and kind of had her own name. Even though she was against all the protagonists, I was proud of her.”
Pitman 9th grader Melanie Babayoo stated, “I think it was a really good sequel, and I feel like it was the first time a sequel was actually good. It still had the funny elements, but the fashion wasn’t that good, it seemed cheaper than the first movie.”
When asked if she thought the franchise would be better as a standalone movie, she replied with, “Yeah, I think so because the first one and the second one are really different from each other so it seemed like I was watching two completely different movies. I prefer the prequel because it’s a classic; it’s more funny, and has better fashion.”
Overall, there are many differences between the two movies. Though most fans prefer the original compared to the sequel, opinions vary between valuing the nostalgia of the first and the trendy and the present-day relatability of the second.
