In the year 1820, a slave was waited to be born but arrived the opposite of expected. Harriet Tubman, in the slave turned into abolitionist, has made history and it’s time for America to thank her.

On April 20th, treasury secretary Jacob J. Lew announced that Harriet Tubman will replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. Harriet Tubman will be the first African American and woman to be featured on the face of U.S. currency. The last time a woman was featured was 1866 to 1957 by Martha washington on the dollar bill silver certificate.

“ The decision to put Harriet Tubman on the new $20 was driven by thousands of responses from Americans young and old,”Lew said in a public letter. “ I have been particularly struck by money comments and reactions from children for whom Harriet Tubman is not just a historical figure, but a role model for leadership and participation in our democracy.”

Tubman was born a slave in Dorchester County, Maryland, where she was cruelly abused by her masters as a child. In 1849, she managed to escape to Philadelphia, then when she had the opportunity she returned to rescue her family.

Harriet Tubman cautiously traveled at night, going back and forth rescuing slave victims. She guided over dozens of slaves to freedom, earning the name “Moses.” Tubman’s actions made slave owners angry and anxious, they’ve came to a point to rewarding anybody that would capture her.

“ I freed a thousand slaves, I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves,” once said Harriet Tubman.

The seventh president, Andrew Jackson, was a controversial figure to do his poorly treatment towards the Native Americans. His past actions has now moved him to the back of the twenty dollar bill.

Harriet Tubman wasn’t automatically the choosen for the face of the bill, there were long debates rooting for other influential historic people. She faced fierce competition from powerful women like Rosa Parks and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Despite the majority of the votes, the African American fighter for justice appealed to the public the most.

An endless lists of celebrities are showing their support towards Tubman.

“If the wonderful news about H. Tubman on the $20 is true, it needs to happen asap. We’ve waited long enough,” tweeted Sophia Bush.

Steve Harvey as well tweeted, “I’m gonna need my pockets full of Tubman’s!”

Not only will this one admirable historic figure be honored, but there will be changes to the five and ten dollar bills.

The ten dollar bill is currently represented by the face of Alexander Hamilton, but Hamilton won’t be alone anymore. He will continue to be in the front of the new $10 note, in the back it will also feature “ leaders of the movement to give women the right to vote on the back.”

On the back of the bill, it will include the treasury movement and images of suffrage leaders. Some revealed are Lucretia Mott, Sojourner truth, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Alice Paul.

Historic events that happened at the steps of Lincoln Memorial will be redesigned in the five dollar bill announced the Treasury Department.

The bill will have Martin Luther King Jr. , Marian Anderson, and Eleanor Roosevelt on the back. No changes will be done to Abraham Lincoln.

The new remolded bills are expected to be unveiled by 2020, also known to be the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave the women the right to vote according to Buzzfeed.

“ Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world”- Harriet Tubman.
