February 20th was a tragic day for the residents of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Jason Brian Dalton, age 45, went on a seven hour killing spree while working as an Uber driver from 5:42 p.m. to 12:40 a.m.

Dalton ultimately killed 6 people and injured 2 that are currently in critical condition. These murders occurred sometime after dropping off customer Matt Mellen, and in between picking up and dropping off other customers.

Mellen is the only customer who left Dalton a bad review about bad driving. After the police talked to him he stated that halfway through the drive Dalton got a phone call and he started driving recklessly.

“We were driving through medians, driving through the lawn, speeding along, and when we came to a stop, I jumped out of the car and ran away” Mellen told the police. After he exited the car, he ran to a friend’s house where he told them what occurred, called the police, and his friend’s fiancée, McKenzie Waite posted a warning about Dalton on Facebook.

An Uber spokesperson confirmed they saw the negative comment from Mellen but did not make it a priority to stop him.

The spokesperson also said, “We get a lot of people saying bad driving and there’s two sides to that, and sometimes, it’s not fair to deactivate them or not give them a warning.”

However, in Uber’s policy it states they have to immediately contact any driver that has a negative comment.

The first shooting happened around 5:42 p.m.; Dalton shot an unidentified woman in her apartment complex parking lot. She was with her three children, all of who are unharmed, and is expected to survive while still in critical condition.

About four hours later Tyler Smith, 17, and Richard Smith, 53, were shot and killed at a car dealership. The father and son went to buy a car for Tyler, which would’ve been his first one.

Only minutes later at 10:24 p.m. Dalton murdered Mary Lou Nye, 60, Dorothy Brown, 74, and Barbara Hawthorne, 68, while they were parked in a car. There was an unnamed 14 year old girl who witnessed the shooting which resulted in her being shot as well but she is currently in critical condition.

Almost two hours later around 12:40a.m. Police caught Dalton and took him into custody by tracking down his Uber car.

One police officer, Jeffrey Getting said, “There is just no question more people would have died if police did not find him when they did.”

Dalton’s motives are still being questioned although what triggered it is currently unknown. All the police know right now is that there is no terrorism connection and he acted alone.
