“American Horror Story isn’t like any other television show, in that it gives us new stories, new worlds,” Kathy Bates, who plays Claudia Devau this season on American Horror Story: Hotel, confesses to MoviePilot.com.

American Horror Story is said to be the spookiest season in the series yet, according to creator Ryan Murphy, due to its chilling content like the fact that creatures live inside the stitched up mattresses.

Ryan Murphy states, “It’s about a theme and an idea that’s very close to my heart that I’ve always wanted to do that’s a little bloodier and grislier I think than anything we’ve ever done before. It’s straight horror.”

This season premiered on October 7th, set in Hotel Cortez; an old, eerie hotel in Los Angeles. The hotel is owned by Countess and fashionista, Elizabeth, who is played by Lady Gaga.

The cast consists of American Horror Story regulars like Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters and many others.

Sarah Paulson plays Hypodermic Sally, a drug user who lives at Hotel Cortez. Kathy Bates plays Iris, the clerk at the front desk that lives in the hotel with her son Donavyn. She constantly butts heads with Sally, the tenant.

Matt Bomer plays Donavyn, one of The Countess’ love interests.

Wes Bently plays Detective John Lowe; he is investigating a series of brutal murders when he gets an unexpected call from the murderer and points him to Hotel Cortez.

Cheyanne Jackson plays Will Drake, a single father and a New York fashion designer that lost interest with the New York lifestyle and moved to Los Angeles to buy Hotel Cortez.

Within the first ten minutes, the show had the audience craving for more and more information; it grabbed your attention right from the start. Although a live creature coming out of a mattress is a little creepy, it was interesting and intriguing.

The characters all have something interesting about them, their backgrounds all vary; but some connect. Donavyn came to the hotel to get heroin from Sally. Iris found out and stormed into the room, unwelcome, to see Donavyn passed out on the bed. Sally left the room, and Iris followed her, only to push her out a window. Sally is now a ghost.

On the website Rotten Tomatoes, 72% of the viewers and 44% of the critics liked the pilot of the series. On IMDB, the first episode received a rating of 8.5 out of 10 stars.

The pilot was very graphic, from blood and guts to nudity. Of all the past season premieres of the American Horror Story franchise, Hotel is perhaps the most chilling. We got to see clips of frightening things like a little boy in a gas mask and pale little kids with bleach blond hair roaming the hallways and peaking around the corners.

Even though it was the first episode in the season, the viewers expected more intense situations. The viewers felt that they didn’t like how the show jumped from character to character’s stories. The show developed enough character, but it was very repetitive.

Although, every season of American Horror Story has its own spine-chilling story, this season should be the eeriest one yet.

The best audience for this show would be teens and young adults, teens and young adults who enjoy horror and romance would enjoy the show best.

Like Cheyanne Jackson said, “Hotels are kind of scary- you just never know who’s on the other side of the door.”
